What cures energy drain?

Just started working out this morning and in order to fit my workouts in, that means a 5am wake up time. I went to bed at a decent time last night, getting 7.5 hours of sleep and I felt great after my workout. But now....7 hours later, I am dragggggging. I am normally a caffeine addict, or I at least can't go the day without either a latte or a mocha. I've decided since they are both loaded with calories and sugar, I would avoid them but now that I am feeling so exhausted, I don't know where else to turn. Anyone have any ideas/suggestions to keep your energy up throughout the day?

    Several thoughts:

    1) You really don't want to go cold-turkey on the caffeine. At least I wouldn't want to :D. I suggest looking at alternative, calorie free options for your caffeine fix. You can even take a no-doz if you want. Then, if you want to go stimulant-free, wean yourself off caffeine gradually.

    2) Carbs are going to be your best energy source. You can get energy from the other macros too, of course, but carbs are pretty much all about energy, so I'd look at your carb load and maybe consider a post-work out shake with carbs and protein.

    3) Take a look at your total calorie intake too. If you're eating too few calories, you're going to feel tired and cranky.

    4) Vitamin Bs are sometimes linked to higher energy levels. I'm not positive I buy into the hype, but there is at least some science backing the claim (whether it's good science or not... I just don't know). If your vitamin D levels are low, that can also lead to low energy. Ditto if you're anemic and your iron is low.

    5) Power naps can be wonderful, if you have the luxury.

    Good luck!
