Protein shakes in the evening?

I am a teacher, so I workout in the late afternoon/evenings during the week. On days I workout later, I have a small dinner so I am not working out on an full stomach. On the later workouts I don't get home from the gym until 7:30 or 8:30...should I have a protein shake afterwards, even though it's late or just not eat anything? On those days it seems like I'm shorter on calories because I eat a smaller dinner...

Just stay away from carbs at night.. I have protein shakes in the evening.. otherwise I'd go nuts!
  • I'm wondering the same thing, except I don't get home from work until 7:30, so I usually eat around 8, then go to do my cardio @ 8:45 and don't get back home until 10. I usually just mix my protein powder in soy milk.

Curious as your reasoning for staying away from carbs at night, is there something that makes them particularly bad at night?

It doesn't matter what time you eat. Enjoy a shake after your workout if you want.

Timing doesn't matter (this includes carbs). Look at your calories and macros, not the clock.

Not necessarily. Just something I stick to as I tend to stay up late and carbs tend to be higher in calories.

there's nothing wrong with eating carbs at night. I eat most of my carbs before bed. I'm always in my goals so it doesn't matter.

Good thread.... I started the protein shakes at night after workouts this week. I love it! It's my sixth meal and I always have room for them in my calorie goal. And I feel like I'm taking care of my body after a workout. I'm not burnt out on them yet, lol. The puddings are a great suggestion - thanks!
