Hello, I just wondered if there was truth behind the more you sweat the more you lose? Should I wear heavier clothes like sweat pants and hoodie while exercising or should I just wear a tee and my yoga Capris? Does it make a difference? Thanks!

  • I think that is a myth and it is also dangerous. Heavier clothes can lead to excessive body temperature which can lead to heat stroke. A hollywood actor died doing this trying to do lose weight a few years ago. I do not believe sweating more accelerates calories burned. Calories are burned by getting your heart rate up.

I see people at the gym with hoods on and I don't get it! That is how wrestlers lose quick weight, but I dont think it is healthy

I haven't tried it - I get hot super easy. I'm probably the FIRST person to take my shirt off. I hate feeling too warm. I can say that I've done quite well working out without sweating into heavy clothing :) However, I can't vouch for whether I'd have lost more if I did workout in sweats.

My guess? You'd lose more water, so perhaps the scale would go down because of water loss, but I wouldn't guess it actually helps you lose fat :)
  • I think 'The more you sweat the more you lose' is referring to putting in a lot of hard work to lose weight. It's about the duration and frequency of sweating... I don't think it's related to the actual amount of sweat that comes out.

I *think* you'd just be losing water-weight, which in my opinion is silly unless you have a weigh-in of some sort, like wrestlers do. I personally am not comfortable working out in bulky clothes like that.

It takes alot to make me sweat so I wear a thermal top and a t-shirt on top of that! Sometimes I wear a plastic bag that I made (cut out the neck and arms) and I put this under my long sleeve shirt!

Make sure if you are going to do this....drink lots of water so that you will not become dehydrated in the process!

I also sit in the sauna for about 15 minutes after my workout! I have a friend that sits in there for an hour but I am not there yet!

    I hope this helps
