Introduction
Whey protein is an indispensable staple in an athlete’s nutritional regimen. They ingest whey
protein shakes with hopes that it will help retain or build precious muscle. However, most never
give a second thought to the health benefits – or drawbacks – of whey protein powders. This is a
GRAVE mistake! What people don’t know about their whey protein powder can be quite
harmful. This manual will blow the lid off the nutritional supplement industry, and the healthdeteriorating
secrets they harbor.
FACT: Most protein powders on the
market are poisoning you – and you
don’t even realize it.
Perhaps you have experienced the following symptoms while on your whey protein regimen:
 Heartburn
 Nausea
 Bloating
 Fatigue
 Muscle waste
 Undesirable weight gain
Most people have experienced any or all of these symptoms at one time or another. However, if
you’re ingesting a protein supplement, these are also symptoms of protein poisoning. Not only is
this harmful to your health and well-being, it is also sabotaging your muscle gains.
When you realize that your body falls out of shape for no reason, it’s extremely frustrating!
And what’s more frustrating is the fact that you’ve done almost everything you were told to keep
yourself in shape. You’ve been training hard, eating healthy and using whey protein once or a
few times per day to support your body’s needs. Yet despite all this, your body suddenly fails to
respond and then inexplicably your energy drops and your hard gains and strength seem to slip
through your fingers! So what stops your body from being strong and healthy? What’s really
going on in your body?
www.GrassFedCowsWhey.com

What’s going on in your body?
Your body is like a vehicle that’s built to drive on a certain fuel. Have you ever driven a vehicle
that was put on the wrong fuel? If you did, the first thing you would noticed are the warning
lights on the dashboard and the second thing you would notice is that the vehicle fails to respond.
Your body is a lot like that vehicle.
You’ve been putting the wrong fuel in your body, and it’s not your fault! The reason why
you’ve been doing this is because you were told that’s the right thing to do. You were told that
this fuel will nourish your body, build muscle, and boost your immuno defenses…
That fuel is whey protein. In theory, it really works! Yes…but that’s only in theory... In reality
what was once the healthiest food on earth turned to be one of the most degraded and polluted
dietary products, almost devoid of any positive nutrition.
So what’s the story behind whey protein? How has this superfood been rendered as junk?
The Truth About Whey Protein

What is Whey Protein?
Whey protein is a by-product of cheese manufacturing that was initially discarded as waste or
used for animal feed but later on discovered by scientists as outstandingly beneficial and the
most powerful immuno supportive food available. Whey protein has been classified as a super
food. It has the perfect amino acid score and the fastest nutrient delivery. It’s naturally
occurring in mammals’ breast milk designed to support newborn growth and provide protection
against infections and disease.
But to provide these benefits, the whey must be whole, unheated and non-denatured. And it
should be derived from healthy pasture-fed cows.
Unfortunately that’s not the case in reality.
In reality most whey proteins available on the market are rendered useless. That’s due to five
major problems in the sourcing and processing of the whey.
www.GrassFedCowsWhey.com

Problem 1: Most Whey Proteins Are Derived From
Unhealthy Grain Fed Cows.
Most whey proteins are derived from grain-fed cows which, unlike grass fed cows, are
commonly unhealthy and routinely treated with antibiotics and hormones, all of which
accumulate in the milk and its derived whey. The result:
The typical whey protein is drenched with drugs and hormones.
And yes, this is the kind of stuff you may have been putting in your body…
But that’s not all. You should be seriously concerned with the processing methods used to
manufacturer this stuff.
Problem 2: Most Whey Products Are Over-Heated
And Acid-Treated
Most whey protein powders are made from ultra pasteurized milk. Pasteurization destroys the
most vital immuno components in the whey. Heat processing breaks down the fragile molecular
bonds of key amino acids rendering the whey deficient and inferior.
Furthermore, most whey products are acid treated in a process called acidification. Acid
treatment is the cheapest way to separate the whey from the casein curd during cheese
manufacturing. Acidification damages the whey similar to heat processing.
In technical terms, heat and acid change the original water soluble configuration of the protein
molecules rendering them denatured and insoluble…which then presents a serious problem to the
supplement manufacturers:
It is difficult to sell a non-soluble protein.
So to resolve this problem, whey manufacturers use chemical detergents. Chemical detergents
are as horrific as they sound, and it makes the already bad stuff even worse.
Problem 3: Most Whey Proteins Are Instantized
With Chemical Detergents…
The cheapest way to turn an insoluble protein into a water soluble one is via chemical detergents.
This is how the vast majority of whey proteins today are instantized so you can mix it up in your
shaker bottle. They are treated with surfactants such as ethoxylated mono-diglycerides, propylene
glycol and polyscorbate 80 all of which are used in soap and shampoo manufacturing.
Yes, you may have been putting soap chemicals in your body!
www.GrassFedCowsWhey.com

The chemical industry tells us that low level exposure is “safe” but according to safety data
sheets of chemical manufacturers, these chemicals may present a serious health risk with
potential side effects on the liver and the central nervous system if sufficient amounts are
absorbed.
Think that is bad? Wait, there’s more!
Problem 4: Most Popular Whey Products Were Found
To Contain Alarming Concentrations
Of Heavy Metals.

A July 2010 article in Consumer Reports Magazine indicated that most whey products, including
some of the most popular brands and biggest names in the US, were tested to contain alarmingly
high concentrations of heavy metals…including lead, arsenic and cadmium. All of these are
known to cause irreversible damage to the neural system and brain, damage the kidneys and
promote cancer when accumulated in the body in high concentrations.
Heavy metal contamination is not something you can afford to overlook. It may take twenty
years or more to get rid of accumulated heavy metals such as cadmium in your body.
Again, the industry denies the facts. They say that the lab results were misleading. They argue
that heavy metals are “naturally occurring” and “normal.”
So how does this affect you?
Quite frankly, this is such a mess you don’t really know what to expect. You can only estimate
how much damage these heavy metals may cause if accumulated overtime -- kidney damage or
brain damage or both.
Athletes by nature are very competitive. Do you really want to compete with kidney or brain
damage? Do you really want to gamble with ingesting heavy metals?
Sadly, there is but another issue with whey protein. Yes, another problem that is in addition to
drugs and hormones, bad processing, chemical pollution and heavy metal contamination. And
this issue may just infuriate you.
www.GrassFedCowsWhey.com

Problem 5: Whey Protein Isolate
All of the slick marketing and advertising for your favorite protein supplements tout the magic of
whey protein isolate. It will help you build muscle better and faster than any other protein they
claim.
Here is the truth about whey protein isolates.
Whey protein isolates do not fit human biology. These proteins are over-processed, devoid of
nutritional cofactors such as minerals, vitamins and lipids which are removed in the processing.
They yield unnaturally high concentrations of protein to which the human body has never
adapted.
The human body can’t effectively utilize food with 90% protein.
Here is why:
Protein is an acid forming food so when it’s ingested in overly high concentrations without its
alkalizing cofactors such as calcium, magnesium or potassium, it over-acidifies the body. Such
is the case with whey protein isolates and the worst among them are those that were acid
treated…
So when protein intake is chronically high (such as with athletes and bodybuilders) whey isolate
becomes a liability. If consumed chronically along with the typical diet that includes meats
and other high-protein foods, it may overacidify the body and lead to a condition known as
metabolic acidosis. The acidification of the body is detrimental. It may cause irreversible
damage.
Here are some of the consequences:
The initial symptoms include heartburn, digestive disorders, urinary infections and fatigue. But
as this condition progresses it literally destroys your body.
Metabolic Acidosis Wastes your Muscle and Degrades your Bone
Tissues. It Shuts your Metabolism Down and Makes you Prone to
Degenerative Disease.
Metabolic acidosis causes severe loss of muscle and bone tissue. It causes accumulation of toxic
ammonia in the body which is then responsible for the typical funky body odor some people
have when sweating in the gym. Accumulated ammonia presents a serious risk to your body -- it
paralyzes your muscles and impairs normal brain function.
Metabolic acidosis causes more damage than previously thought. It works like a vicious cycle.
The acidifying effect on the body produces acid ash which disrupts the body’s natural acid/base
balance. Desperate to fix this, the body digs into its own tissues pulling out vital alkalizing
minerals for buffering the system.
www.GrassFedCowsWhey.com

And as the levels of protein and acid rise, cellular congestion occurs along with loss of bone and
muscle mass – and the entire body begins to slow down getting prone to degenerative disease.
So, while you’re being told that whey protein isolate is God’s gift to muscle building, the truth is
a cold, hard slap in the face. The supplement manufacturers won’t tell you this. They cover it up
in their marketing. But you are the one paying the price – with your wallet AND your health.
How do you combat the damaging effects of whey protein isolate?
Don’t use proteins which are isolated or acid treated!
Your whey protein choice must be whole and non-acid treated. In its whole form, whey protein
is naturally bound with alkalizing minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium.
The body uses these alkalizing minerals to neutralize and eliminate the acidifying effect of the
protein. So when you eat whole whey protein your body can easily maintain its acid/base
equilibrium intact. There is no guesswork as to the ratios of minerals to protein – nature has done
it for you.
Remember, your whole whey protein must be non-acid treated.
Stay away from all acid whey products derived from acid cheese or casein manufacturing. And
don’t use whey products which are produced via ion exchange/low pH treatment. All these
varieties are acid damaged and unhealthy.
As the icing to the cake, damaged whey presents another problem – it has a typical funky
aftertaste. Supplement manufacturers can’t sell protein with a funky aftertaste because you won’t
buy it. This brings us to the last problem.
www.GrassFedCowsWhey.com

Problem 7: To Mask the Nasty Aftertaste Of
Damaged Whey Powders, Manufacturers
Use Chemical Flavorings and Dangerous
Additives.
Supplement companies use chemical additives without regard to their toxic effects. These
include chemical flavoring and coloring, monosodium glutamate (MSG), artificial sweeteners,
chemical detergents, chemical alkalies and chemical preservatives. Also added to the mix are the
so-called “natural” but extremely harmful fructose and sugar, which are known for their
devastating effects on insulin and blood sugar. And as for “low carb” products, they use sugar
alcohols known for causing severe bloating, digestive disorders, ethanol toxicity and diarrhea.
If you’re a brave soul, find the nutritional label of your favorite whey protein powder and
compare the ingredients to this list:
MSG appears under different names such as hydrolyzed protein, calcium caseinate, maltodextrin
and yeast extract. Artificial sweeteners include aspartame, asulfame K and sucralose. Fructose
additives include crystalline fructose, high fructose corn syrup and corn syrup solids.
Virtually all flavored whey products contain one or some of these dangerous ingredients. They’re
so commonly found in protein products you’d think they’re “normal” and perhaps okay.
But they’re not okay!
None of these additives is okay. In fact some of these are known as extremely harmful and
hazardous, so much so that they have been banned by some European countries. MSG has been
linked to brain disease. Chemical sweeteners have been linked to metabolic toxicity and cancer.
Fructose has been linked to obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Now you know the truth. The covers have been taken off, and you see what’s really inside that
container sitting on your shelf.
But now the question remains:
If Protein Powder is This Harmful, Why is No One Doing Anything
About It?
The answer is politics and money.
The nutritional supplement industry is a 200 billion dollar business annually. With this much
money, they buy politicians…they lobby in high places… they can do virtually anything they
want…
www.GrassFedCowsWhey.com

And they’re driven by one single motive:
Profit!
The lower the costs are in producing protein, the higher the profit is. That’s the motto of the
whey protein industry -- using cheap processing, adding cheap chemicals & sugar ingredients
and making huge profits. They don’t want you to know the difference between good and bad.
They want you to believe that crap is quality. They create magical-sounding names to their
proprietary blends of whey protein isolate and hydrolyzed whey.
They want to continue making huge profits on your back.
For the whey protein industry, false information and deceit are common means of doing
business. For them, the truth presents a serious threat! If people knew how to choose quality
whey, this industry would have utterly collapsed!
How Do You Find Quality Whey?
How Do You Know Whether It’s Quality Whey or Not?
You can detect quality whey via Smell, Taste and Solubility. Yes, you’ll notice the taste
difference immediately. Once you try an unheated non-acid whole whey from raw milk of
pasture-fed cows, you’ll shake your head with disbelief because the difference is night and day.
Quality whey protein doesn’t even resemble the typical manufactured whey protein. It tastes
more like fresh dairy cream – clean taste, naturally sweet, no aftertaste.
But the aroma, taste and solubility are only your initial indicators of quality. You still need to
understand what quality whey means. You need to know the real criteria of quality whey. And
you need to know how to find it.
To Be Classified As Quality Whey, the Product Has To Be:
 Whole & Unheated
 Non-Acid Treated
 Derived From Raw Milk Of Pasture-fed Cows
That’s about the criteria which most whey products don’t fit.
To start with, most whey proteins are byproducts of farm factory cows. Unlike pasture-fed cows
which are free range, happily grazing and raised by small family farms that care about their
animals’ health, the farm factory cows are inhumanely caged, overly crowded, overly stressed
grain-fed and drugged with antibiotics and hormones.
Think about that image for a second… on one hand, you have happy, cared-for cows that are free
to roam the farm. On the other hand, you have cows in the equivalent of crack houses – shot up
with drugs, caged up and cramped, wallowing in their own mess. From which type of cow would
you rather get your protein?
www.GrassFedCowsWhey.com

The difference between these two types of cows is substantial and it’s manifested in their milk.
Family Farm Pasture-Fed Cows Yield A Healthier Milk
Than Factory Farm Cows …
And They Yield A Superior Whey Protein.
Pasture-fed cows’ milk is superior in every way. It has a better amino score, and it’s richer in
immuno peptides, antioxidants and metabolic supportive lipids. Unfortunately, they’re not easy
to find.
Why is it so Difficult to Find Pasture-fed Cows’ Whey?
Because pasture-fed cows’ whey production requires a special sourcing strategy involving
segregation of milk, along with stringent quality controls and supreme manufacturing standards
that most whey manufacturers are not capable of taking on themselves. The current whey
industry is not geared towards quality whey production. And since most whey proteins today
are inferior, they don’t possess real whey properties.
Here are the properties you should expect to get from quality whey protein.
Quality Whey Has A More Impressive Amino Acid Profile Than Any
Food In The World.
Quality pasture-fed cows’ whey provides the complete spectrum of essential and conditionally
essential amino acids, and it’s remarkably high in the muscle-building branch chained amino
acids (BCAA).
Pound for pound, this type of whey protein provides 300% more of the anabolic amino acid
leucine to trigger muscle protein synthesis than meat, chicken, fish or eggs!
Pasture-fed cows’ whey protein has a similar composition to human breast milk. It provides
exclusive immuno peptides and metabolic supportive nutrients to help support immunity and
growth.
www.GrassFedCowsWhey.com

Quality Whey is an Exclusive Source Of The
Immuno Boosting Peptide Glutamylcysteine
Glutamylcysteine is the most bioactive form of the fragile amino acid cysteine. Cysteine is
destroyed in most protein foods due to cooking and processing. But the body needs cysteine to
produce its own antioxidant peptide glutathione, the most important immuno-molecule in the
body. That’s where glutamylcysteine comes into play – it instantly converts to glutathione
which then participates in all major immuno activities, protecting your tissues from oxidative
damage caused by toxicity, radiation disease and aging.
To keeps your body healthy and strong, you need high levels of
glutathione. It allows you fast recovery from training or
injury. It protects you from infections, chemical toxicity,
radioactive fallout and disease.
The point is:
Quality Whey Is Your Best Means to Keep Your Glutathione
Level High
Whole unheated pasture-fed cows’ whey protein is the most proven effective glutathione
boosting food on earth. It contains the highest levels of glutathione precursors as naturally
occurring in its immuno peptides which include immunoglobulins, alpha lactalbumin, beta
lactoglobulin, serum albumin and lactoferrin. The immuno boosting healing effects of whey
protein and glutathione have been widely documented -- proven to benefit athletes as well as
people who suffer from immuno deficiencies or age-related metabolic decline.
Quality Whey Protein Yields the Fastest Anabolic Impact
on the Muscle
One unmatched property of quality whey protein over damaged protein is fast nutrient delivery.
This makes quality whey protein the most effective for muscle recovery and building. That is due
to its high solubility and high protein bioavailability. Fast nutrient delivery allows fast muscle
nourishment during the post exercise “window of opportunity.”
After exercise, there is a short period in which the muscle is at peak capacity to assimilate
protein and nutrients towards growth, so it needs to be fed with fast assimilating protein. Quality
whey protein can perfectly accommodate this window of opportunity. It yields the fastest
anabolic impact on the muscle.
But that’s not the case with inferior whey. Inferior insoluble and degraded whey cannot
adequately nourish the muscle after exercise and it fails to promote recovery and growth.

Where Do You Find Pasture-fed Cows’ Whey?
There are a few companies that claim to sell grass fed cows’ whey, but you need to be careful
with your choice.
Beware Of Companies That Use The Term “Grass Fed” Or “Native
Whey” But Provide No Proof Of Pasture Feeding!
A true pasture-fed cows’ whey product must be supported by pasture-fed certification. Quality
whey protein production involves a tight quality control protocol which requires massive lab
testing. The lab reports serve to guarantee the protein matrix integrity, proving the viability of
the amino acids and immuno components along with nutritional cofactors such as lipids,
minerals, trace elements and naturally occurring vitamins.
If you find a product that claims to be grass fed cows’ or native whey but does not taste clean
and isn’t pasture-fed certified or supported by reliable lab reports, most likely this is not quality
whey.
What About New Zealand Whey?
New Zealand whey is grass-fed certified but its quality is questionable.
The reason: All New Zealand and Australian whey are byproducts of pasteurized milk.
Pasteurization is mandatory in Australia. Consequently, the typical New Zealand whey is nonsoluble
in its non-instantized form and usually has a notable acid aftertaste, which indicates
degradation and denaturing of the protein matrix. Most New Zealand whey companies fail to
provide reliable lab reports of their immuno components. A recent review of New Zealand lab
reports showed extremely low levels of lactoferrin, which again indicates that the whey is
deficient and inferior.

So Where Do You Get Quality Whey?
Does It Even Exist?
Quality pasture-fed cows’ whey, which is certified and supported by reliable lab reports, was not
available until recently.
Defense Nutrition was created with the mission to offer people all-natural nutritional products of
the highest quality, which was not widely available before. That includes pasture-fed, certified

I agree. Grain fed cows are not healthy to extract the whey from the milk solids, consume the milk or eat the meat.

Plus all it does is keep factory farms going strong, such as Cargill.

It disgusts me to no end.

Find a source of grass fed beef, purchase raw milk from local dairy farms and if you want quality protein, find a company that manufactures whey protein from grass fed cows.

It costs more, but it so worth it in the long run.

    Good stuff!
All of those symptoms are also general symptoms of a food intolerance. If someone is experiencing any of those things as a result of something they are eating - something is off balance!
I'm pretty much out off cow all together. I'll have quality red meat once a month if that. I eat cheese rarely, and I don't drink milk from cows. After all, if cows kick their OWN youngin' off milk, and WE wean our youngin' off people milk, than why would we feed ourselves something that's whole purpose is to make baby cows grow until they can stomach other sources of food?

It wouldn't be evolutionarily advantageous for an animal, including humans, to follow their mother around for the rest of their life to get milk. Or for the mother to constantly need more calories in order to produce milk. Living things need to be able to fend for themselves. On the other hand, it WAS advantageous for humans to evolve lactose tolerance beyond childhood, allowing us to be able to take advantage of the energy in animal milk.

I'm not claiming either way is healthy or unhealthy, just saying why.
