Has anyone done the Bod Pod?

I was thinking about getting my body comp done in the Bod Pod, and was wondering if anyone has any experience?
For those who don't know what it is:
" The BOD POD system measures body composition by determining body volume and body weight. Once those two variables are determined, body density can be computed and inserted into an equation to provide percent fat measurements. Body weight is easily determined by the use of an accurate scale. Body volume is determined by applying the gas law (p1V1=p2V2), an expansion of Boyle´s Law, pV=c. The BOD POD measures volume by monitoring changes in pressure within a closed chamber. These pressure changes are achieved by oscillating a speaker mounted between the front testing chamber and a rear reference chamber, which causes complementary pressure changes in each chamber. The pressure changes are very small and are not noticed by the individual being tested."

I want to get body fat tested a one point. There's a clinic that does DEXA scans in my city. That's where they do a whole body X-ray then look at where the fat is deposited in the body. You get a body far percentage and they also see if you have too much visceral fat etc.

I did this for a nutrition study at my college. I had to wear a spandex one piece bathing suit (awkward!) while in the chamber. It took forever, because I kept messing up the blow test-basically where you have to blow into a tube with juuuuuuuuuuust the right force. Other than that it's easy peasy. The worst part is finding out just what your body fat % is.

I have been tested in one, and totally recommend it. It's very accurate, and gives you a great reference point for whatever goals you might have. It's fast and easy too. Check around for pricing. I have a college nearby with one that only charges $10. Other places I've seen are $40-50.

The Air Force uses the Bod Pod for official body fat measurements on its troops. I'm retired AF, and I have access to it for free at my local AF base. From the research I've done, it's pretty accurate - anywhere between 1%-3% margin of error, which is second only to the water dunk test or DEXA scan, which are more expensive. Someone who is really experienced with calipers can probably do as well, but they're hard to find.

I get my BF checked about every 3 months. I don't know what it costs on the economy since mine is free, but I think it should be around $50 or less. You don't have to breathe into a tube - just sit there and breathe normally. You do have to wear a swimsuit of spandex bike shorts and a sports bra, plus a swim cap to cover your hair. It only takes about 5 minutes and is easy. Good luck!

For the place I am looking at, it's $45 for 1, $80 for 2, $99 for 3 or $199 for unlimited for 1 year. I might do the 3 tests and do it every 4 months. I wish I did it a year ago.

I am curious if the Tanita body fat scale is accurate that I have at home. I hope not.

I have done the bod pod and hydrostatic weighing. The less clothes you wear, the more accurate the results and the least amount of spaces for air to hide, the more accurate. It is leaps and bounds more accurate than caliper testing! Hydrostatic weighing is the most accurate. I would check with colleges (usually human performance dept) and with hospitals (the hospital that I go to for hydrostatic weighing is has it as part of their physical rehabilitation center.)

Weight on a scale doesn't matter as much as your percentage of fat. It is your percentage of fat that leads to diabetes, heart disease, etc. It also shows results you can't see...

No. But it has been tested as being very consistent, depending on the user being consistent on when they use it.
Need to hit the same level of hydration level, which is probably the biggest difficulty.

If you worked out hard the night before, you could be over hydrated on under depending on your water recovery, compared to the previous test that occurred after a rest day.

But if you can get those variable down, it is consistent and will show a direction you are going, even if it is some % off.

I was just checking into this as I want a better determination on what my real BMR is not just the one calculated from the formula by height, weight, and age.

A body composition finding won't tell you anything about your BMR. It is still based on tables of averages, this time for lean weight as opposed to total weight.
But then again, you may get your BMR more accurate, but your maintenance calories is now off, because it takes more energy to haul around more weight.

For BMR, you can find much more accuracy with an outfit that does fitness testing. Their same equipment is used while you lay there, hopefully close to your BMR.

Search Google for your area for fitness testing, VO2 max testing, BMR testing.
