I've read both ways. I would say whatever your own fitness level allows you to do. Any amount of exercise is going to be good for you so if you can only physically manage to do 10 minutes at a time then that is better then not doing any at all. I started off weighing in at 237 pounds and could manage to do 5 minutes on my elliptical, I did that 3 times a day and then worked myself up to 10 minutes at a time 3 times per day. I'm now down 47 pounds and can do 30 minutes at one time easily. Do what you are able and build it up each week.

for me right now it's easier to break it up into shorter workouts, because I'm still trying to get back into shape & would just get frustrated if I went for a longer workout

Every little bit helps but from what i've read to be the most aerobically effective you need to get your heart rate up to 80% and maintain it for about 20 min. thats when you get the good fat burning. But do what you can fit in, its a great start :)

i just did 40 minutes so its not about that so much as its hard to find a forty minute section in my day. 10 minutes here and there is a lot more workeable with my schedule (we are starting a business i exclusively breastfeed our baby and have a toddler at home (2) my toddler likes doing something with me for about 10 minutes sometimes 15 then he is done.

Get a heart rate monitor :) You need to find out what your resting heart rate is first and then you can go from there.

I have no idea whether one way would be better than the other. However, I don't know about anybody else, but when I train/work out, I tend to get a bit of a sweat on (actually I sweat like a bloody pig  ), I need a damn good shower afterwards. If I were to do multiple sessions, I would either be forever changing into fresh clothes, or I would be walking around in between exercise sessions really stinking.

This is why I do an hour-long exercise session and that is it for the day.
