Hoist V2 lifting machine

Hello all. I have a Hoist V2 and would like to start lifting. But, I have no idea where to start??? We've had it for years, but, I was never into using it. But, now I've lost enough weight and would like to start toning up as well. I've searched the forum and googled and haven't come up with much...I don't have the poster that came with the machine anymore either
Also, I'm not sure if it's better to use the machine or use free weights?
Thanks
