Sodium???

I am on a 1550 calorie diet and meeting my goal is not too hard. The problem I am having is keeping the sodium intake down to what myfitnesspal is suggesting. It says i need to stay below 2500 a day. Do i need to not worry about sodium so much. Some days I'm 1-3k over the 2500 suggested amount. Most of the sodium comes from when i have brown rice, I like to put soy sauce on which is very low in calories but really high in sodium. Same with Campbell chicken noodle soup, low calories and high sodium. Any suggestions?

Hey Douglas,
Its very important to keep sodium down for weight loss. And believe me I love my salt....However I use other methods to cure this habit. I use Mrs. Dash on a lot of things instead of salt, and I also use many other spices to cure my appetite for salt. Not only that but many foods already contain high amounts of sodium without the need to add any more. If you like spicy foods too I will use like picante as an alternative. Keep up the good work. Find some spices you like and use that. There is alway times to treat yourself too. I usually do this on like the day of my weigh in. I will substitute salt for the one day and then use the rest of the week to burn it off (the guilt effect) ....LOL. Hope this helps.0 -
My sodium levels are HORRIBLE some days. Like today. 2 meals and I'm already over by about 900 on sodium. And it was from the low fat/low calorie taco soup I made. Not from canned soup. It's really frustrating to me, but until I added that second package of taco seasoning, there was very little flavor (even with a whole onion in the soup)! The only thing I know to do is to drink more water...
Good luck. I feel your pain!0 -
processed foods are loaded with sodium!
you should try to prepare more homemade foods which are so much lower in sodium.
one place to start is maybe making your own soup? I make a big batch on Sunday, and eat it all week for lunch.
Search the threads for recipes, there are tons!0 -
I keep my sodium at 1500mg a day (my diary is open)
- stay away from anything canned! ... try using frozen or fresh veggies instead, and look for reduced sodium soups. Not only are canned veggies full of sodium, but the canning process destroys a vast majority of their nutritional content.
- stay away from frozen meals
- look for low/reduced soium options... they are everywhere now, from tomato sauce to bread
- use dry beans, not canned ... they make take longer to prepare but the sodium difference is worth it
- try to avoid soy sauce ... even the low sodium one is insane. "La Choy" makes a "Orange Ginger Stir Fry" sauce (25 Cal a tablespoon, but only 150mg of sodium) I use it all the time, its amazing
