Hi,

I was wondering if this sounds like an OK idea?

I have set my weight loss goal at 0.5lbs a week, I'm around about the weight i want to be, maybe just a kg or 2 more lose. I was planning on eating my 1480 calories a day, not eating back exercise calories daily, and then having one day were i can eat back all my exercise calories as a treat.

I am also just beginning to weight train, trying to do 3 sets of 8 reps to where the last couple are quite hard. Will being on a deficit mean I still gain good muscle mass?

Thank you for your help, I am really enjoying this site and community.

What's your goal? Eat your goal and you'll be fine. Try not to go more than 100 in either direction from it.

I think this is OK, provided overall you are eating enough food.

I don't think it's possible to gain muscle whilst eating at a deficit, but you should continue to do resistance training so you don't lose muscle whilst losing weight.
    .
  • Sounds good - I would also recommend your daily protein intake to be 1g per pound of your lean muscle mass (using your goal weight and body fat percentage, multiply the two and subtract from your goal weight to find your target lean muscle mass). Sufficient protein will improve your muscle's ability to recover after weight training. Good luck!

Saving a weeks worth of exercise calories to eat all in one day.. I'm sorry but this sounds too much like a binge eating disorder waiting to happen. I would not suggest practicing this kind of behavior.
Building muscle requires calories, specifcally from protein. If you work out and do not eat back your calories, your body could go into starvation mode and begin using up its own muscle for energy.

Please read this link on eating exercise calories:

  • Thanks for the replies  . Its probably stupid how much a few replies meant when I checked in,

I'm looking at eating about 1500 calories at the moment, and then work out 3-4x a week at about 300 calories a session. Thinking about it I prob eat back at least half of those in my post workout snack (normally a muesli bar or similar).

I figure a 600 calorie cushion, while making sure im still net about 1350 a day should be ok for a dinner out or a few drinks.I like the idea of being able to treat myself every now and then, and think I can do this without going crazy. I think i started getting confused when reading about spike days.

    Good luck everyone
