Holding on...

Options
I read this article (http://walking.about.com/od/treadmillworkouts/a/treadmillhold.htm) last week about how holding on while using a treadmill is bad for you. So I thought I'd check it out today. I'm amazed how much more effort it is; I had to reduce my pace down quiet a bit while still getting a much better workout... The thing is, I didn't think I was putting that much effort into holding on.

I never hold on to the treadmill. I occasionally walk at a slight incline and my pace varies, but is usually 3.5 or 3.8 mph. It really is a much better workout. FYI, you shouldn't hold on to the bars of the elliptical either for the same reason.

    Hi Mike

It's surprising isn't it. Years ago, when I first started going on the treadmill, I could only walk on there and it was always whilst holding on. Gradually though, I began to walk on my own and then run.

That is a good thing to know since I always hold on to get my heartrate measurements. But saying that, I will always opt for a nice walk outside (rain, snow or shine) instead because I think taking a walk is an even better workout which burns even more calories and there are no gym fees to pay.
