so apparently playing violin for an hour a day burnings around 150 calories. I play violin about 3 hours a day on top of cello, bass, and piano at college. I had NO idea playing an instrument was considered exercise. I haven't been counting these in my daily exercise count. I'm under "lighty active" so should I even worry about recording this?

Hey...if I can count the calories burned for shovelling snow and dragging a vacuum around the house, you can count the calories burned for playing the Violin, Cello & Piano
I would imagine that playing something any of these instruments would be a bit of a workout...lots of arm & hand motion, right?
Count it...it might help you out in the end

It depends - I also do "active" things on a daily basis - I paint and ride my bike all over campus. However, I don't record these activities, since part of the estimated 2000 calories that you burn each day already include calories used doing other things beyond keeping your body alive. Also, I figure that since I tend to go a little over in calories (and does anyone actually record that one french fry they bummed off their friend?), it doesn't hurt to have my "calories earned from exercise" count be a little low.
I suppose if you are being incredibly accurate, this could be something to record . . .
Another idea would be if you have one of those calories-burned personal monitors, I guess I'd suggest wearing it through a normal day for you. Then take how many calories you burned, and subtract 500 - 800 calories (depending on how much weight you want to lose per week) from that. The number you get will give you your base caloric intake, what you should eat on a day when you don't do any extra exercise, and then you can calculate based on that. Just be careful to not dip below 1200 calories a day for your net caloric intake - that's how much the body needs for just the basic functions, and going below that will put you into starvation mode, slowing your metabolism and in turn your weight loss.
