Kidney Stones

Help! My husband is having issues with kidney stones. This is a first experience and I would like to make sure it is his ONLY episode.
He has not passed them yet, but I am assuming they will be the common ones.
Besides increasing his water intake, are there any other suggestions as to what he can try to prevent any further episodes? I will be having him drink more cranberry juice (100% juice), but are there any other things he can try?
He prefers processed food (something I have been trying to wean him from), but doesn't drink coffee or more than one cola a day. He will not drink teas of any sort, and will only eat a limited variety of vegetables.
He does exercise regularly, although back and knee issues are limiting his cardio activities. (limited walking - no biking)
Suggestions? (Trading him in for a newer model, while tempting, is not an option.) :-)

It depends on what the stone is made of. Is he straining his urin? He can have the stone analyzed to see what it's composition is, that will tell him what (if any) dietary changes he should make.
I've had several, and for me cranberry juice only makes it worse/encourages stone development.
Also, has he had any x-rays does to see if it's something in his kidneys or ureter?0 -
My BF just went through this the last 6 months or so. He's had them broken up only to get them again. After the first round the docs forgot to test them to see what caused them. Brilliant! There are several things that can cause them and there are different types of stones. They need to be tested to find out what does it.
My BF has a HORRIBLE diet. Salts everything...eats fast food every meal. it's horrendous what he puts in himself. I thought for SURE it was going to be his high salt diet or just the crap that he eats.
Turns out after this second round he got tested and learned that his was caused by too much Vitamin D. He drinks a OJ or chocolate milk every am. Go figure it was that of all things.
Hopefully after having these last ones broken up, he can cut his Vitamin D intake back and see if it helps.0
