Training for a climb

I would like to train for a couple of climbs this year. I am thinking Mt. Monadnock in late spring, and if that goes well, Mt. Washington in July.

Looking for input as to how to train - keeping in mind that there are not any mountains in my immediate area! I like the Arc trainer at the gym, and can do it at the highest "incline" which is a great workout. I don't really do the treadmill as it bothers my foot (8 months post bunion surgery).

My dr. gave me the ok to try them, assuming I purchase "decent hiking boots" - any suggestions?

Thanks all!

Is the arc trainer the stepper machine? That's great! Is like an escalator. Hikinh anytime you can outdoors is good preperation x

Ah darn you got me all excited with the climbing.... you mean hike.

HIIT is really good, as well as weighted walks.

I have a friend who runs with a gas mask on to deprive himself of oxygen. Its not totally sound science/safe but he hikes like a champ.

Oops, ok, I guess I mean "Hiking with Altitude" as opposed to attitude (I can have that too though!) - not rock climbing.
