How old is "too old" to take child in opposite sex bathroom?

I'm a single mother of a 10 year old boy. Being that I'm a bit paranoid about stuff, I take him into the ladies room with me. However, its to the point where I've gotten dirty looks and things said to me by the women in the bathroom.
So those of you with children of the opposite sex, what do you do if your partner isn't with you or you're single? How old is too old?

Also, when he does go into the men's I stay right outside the men's latrine, and the guys give me weird looks or think I'm there to pick up on them...like seriously?? LOL.
