Just something to think about.....

More "Get Real, Barbie" statistics:*

• There are two Barbie dolls sold every second in the world.
• The target market for Barbie doll sales is young girls ages 3-12 years of age.
• If Barbie was a real woman, she'd have to walk on all fours due to her proportions.
• A girl usually has her first Barbie by age 3, and collects a total of seven dolls during her childhood.
• Over a billion dollars worth of Barbie dolls and accessories were sold in 1993, making this doll big business and one of the top 10 toys sold.
• If Barbie were an actual women, she would be 5'9" tall, have a 39" bust, an 18" waist, 33" hips and a size 3 shoe.
• Barbie calls this a "full figure" and likes her weight at 110 lbs.
• At 5'9" tall and weighing 110 lbs, Barbie would have a BMI of 16.24 and fit the weight criteria for anorexia. She likely would not menstruate.
• Slumber Party Barbie was introduced in 1965 and came with a bathroom scale permanently set at 110 lbs with a book entitled "How to Lose Weight" with directions inside stating simply "Don't eat."

She would be exceedingly thin and likely have breast implants, but some of this is crap. I highly doubt she would have to walk on all fours. And her waist is obviously corseted so that 18" figure is not her natural measurement.

Her waist isn't corseted. She looks like that when her clothes are off.

I am aware of how she looks with her clothes off. However her purpose is a fashion doll, not a naked doll. She is designed to look a certain way in clothing.

I get the point of this but sometimes things that are well intentioned just don`t resonate and am afraid if this is a real campaign lots of folks will just roll their eyes and think "It is just a doll for heavens sake".
A certain slice of Americana too.

I would prefer a focus on the teen magazine and the fashion world to stop pushing the gaunt, hardly any figure look.
    Just my opinion.

Why do people spend so much time thinking, talking, caring about what 1% can be? Do what you can, be who you can, care for who you are. Be it wealth, fitness, beauty, whatever, live the life you were meant to live. Sorry, but I'm getting tired of it.

I've seen this before and it's so interesting! The girl who did that statue of the Barbie actually used to suffer from anorexia, so that is why she did it. Also, they've made Barbie's measurements different in the last couple of years.

I was always a chubby kid, and I never once fantasized about looking like Barbie, despite having about 20 of them. My poor body image came from family.

While now I think that Barbies certainly aren't the worst thing young woman face when it comes to body image, it is important to realize that it definitely helped pave the way to the unrealistic expectations of body image that women constantly face in the media now.

    It's definitly interesting
But I played with babies until I was 12 and I'm 178 lbs lol
I never felt pressure to look like Barbie, it was way after I stopped playing with barbies that I started to feel pressure from media

It's just a doll? I personally hated them as a kid and used to rip my sisters ones heads off. I just don't get what all the fuss about dolls my 6yr old has a couple of barbies and a couple of bratz dolls and the bratz are completely out of proportion but I'm pretty sure she's not going to want to grow up to have a head 3 times bigger than her body.

Haha I know the model at he top! Her name is Katie Halchishick and she works closely with my mentor Dr. Hugo Schwyzer in the Perfectly Un-perfect Project (PUP), Natural Model Management, and Healthy Is The New Skinny.
  • Wow... all the cartoon women are the same. Barbie is a doll and I always told my daughter she is run way model material... something that is not usually obtainable unless you want to eat lettuce and drink water and have nothing else in life!

Am I the only person who's annoyed by this Barbie nonsense? Growing up, I was overweight and never ONCE did I sit there with my Barbies (i had like, fifty of them) and say "I want to be EXACTLY like Barbie! Proportions and all! I agree that an unhealthy body image is horrible, but Barbie is a toy!

    Sigh, rant over.

Oky whats the deal with it its a doll there are many dolls that portray man in the same disproportional way.
And whoever made the big barbie doll didnt hit the measurements correctly its totally different then the little barbie just look at the breasts.
Yes i agree "real woman" look better then barbie dolls but they come in all sizes and shapes some have double hips, some have wider hip bones etc..
    These are all fit woman.

And there is another nice link here
    http://www.thelingerieaddict.com/2011/12/body-image-body-snark.html

And considering the male fit look that is going all over the place that forces alot of guys into single digits numbers and makes em obsessed about their six packs and doing all the weird stuff to keep low body fat is considered healthy and fit ... I wonder...

I hated barbies growing up too...used to cut off all their hair and they smelled funny! And they always came in slutty clothes and perpetual 4" hooker heels. My girlfriend had the whole Malibu mansion, convertible car, Ken & other playmates and we would play for hours together but I found my brother's toys more interesting!

I realize it's just a doll. The real disturbing thing is that back in the day a bunch of men marketers in suits sat around in a room thinking that this doll would somehow represent the ideal, aspirational woman, the woman little girls would fantasize about, would wanna play with and was a reflection of women in society at the time. So misguided and times have changed. Hopefully.

Seriously people its a freaking doll. I dont understand how anyone could look at a barbie and think thats what they need to look like. It would be kinda hard to get the smooth crotch anyways.
I get so sick of the constant "omg society is pressureing me to look like this" " I played with barbies so I have to look like her" wah wah wah we all have brains and should be using them to think for ourselves.I just dont get it.
I also dont rember anywhere on barbies package where it said hey little girls you need to look like this!! I could have missed it because i was busy ripping of theire heads and burning them though.
My daughter plays with monster high dolls they kind of look a little sway back to me with an *kitten* that sticks out 3 feet should i be worried about my daughter?
omg would if she starts playing with bratz dolls those things look like a mix between a hollywood blv street walker and an alien grey
