I am an ex 30 a day smoker. Giving up was one of the best things I have ever done and would never go back, it actually irritates me slightly that some people seem to feel slightly sorry for me, like I am missing out?! anyway, rant over; there is a girl i know who is boderline anorexic, she exercises very heavily and is about to start training for the london marathon. However i have noticed she smokes such a lot, probably about 30 or more a day... I can't believe she is capable of exercising so much and still smoking - how is it possible? when I smoked I could barely make it up the road... I thought exercise was nearly impossible if you smoked?

well, I suppose if she exercises like crazy, her lungs are able to do more than someone who smokes a lot and doesn't exercise all the time; but I would assume this is not the norm. Don't know how old she is, either, or how long she has been smoking.....if she continues like that, it will catch up with her. Just imagine what she could do if she WASN'T smoking! Pretty sad, hopefully she will quit.

Genetics. I am much fitter and healthier now than when I quit 9 months ago, but even with a 25 year, 2 pack a day habit, I could run up 2 or 3 flights of stairs before getting winded. It was starting to bog me down, and that's why I quit. But a younger person with good genes may not have issues until they smoke for many years.

I used to smoke too....believe it or not, I used to do my marathon training runs and have a smoke right after running! I don't miss smoking but it certainly kept my weight down!
