I'm thinking about getting a TRX kit for my basement. Is there a benefit to this vrs just doing pushups, pullups, situps and other standard exercises that don't use weight? It looks cool, but doesn't seem like it offers that much more. http://www.trxtraining.com/

It's a different type of training. The straps allow for a little more "fine tuning" of resistance levels than you might get with pushups, plus it provides more variety, and it includes more stabilization and core training than a lot of body weight exercises.

Whether or not that constitutes "that much more" is really in the eye of the beholder. It's not really a substitute for, say, weight lifting. Again, however, people have different needs and different definitions of what "functional strength" means to them. By that I mean that TRX is probably not going to help you bench 250 lbs, but it may be that, from a functional standpoint, no one needs to be able to do that anyway.

IMO, as an adjunct training piece for your basement, TRX might work well--it's hard to adequately equip a basement with the appropriate collection of weight lifting equipment and TRX can cover for most of it.

I went to some TRX boot-camps at my gym and was surprised at how good of a workout it can give you. It was an hour long session doing 3 reps of each exercise for 45 seconds with a 15 second break in between.
