The problem with Chinese is that they are sodium rich. Run a few favorites through and look up the calories and sodium, it's really a once in a while food for MFP-ers.

    I love steamed veggie dumplings!
  • Anything with steamed chicken and veggies is delicious and pretty low in calories! Just remember: portion control is key!

I get this from my local hole-in-the-wall, and ask for the sauce on the side. I don't even hardly eat the rice most of the time!

Cicken chow mein is chicken stir fried with veggies and served over chow mein noodles.............. chop suey is over rice......... Any chinese stir fry is not going to be outragous on calories. It's the fried foods, the rice and noodles where the big calories come in. Also if it is a sweet sauce like sweet and sour it is made with a sugar syrup.
  • I found a site that says chicken chow mein is only 120 calories, but I find that hard to believe, when steamed shrimp and vegetables is more than that. I love chinese food and would eat it every day if I could, but we have to eat it every once in a while.

This site is quite the eye-opener on the calories in chinese food. http://www.cspinet.org/nah/chinese.html

This should be rephrased as "Best Chinese takeaway that most takeaways will have" as most of these suggestions aren't available in any Chinese restaurant I've ever been in lol

But according to this I saw on MiniMins ages ago....

Danger Zone – 5 Worst Chinese Menu Items

Orange Beef: 1,770 calories and 66g fat!
Kung Pao Chicken: 1,620 calories and 76g fat
General Tso’s Chicken: 1,600 calories and 59g fat
Sweet and Sour Pork: 1,610 calories and 71g fat
House Fried Rice: 1,480 calories and 50g fat

Home Base – 5 Best Chinese Menu Items

Hot and Sour Soup: 110 calories and 4g fat
Chicken with Black Bean Sauce: 700 calories, 25g fat
    Stir-Fried Vegetables: 750 calories and 19g fat
Hunan Tofu: 910 calories and 28g fat
Shrimp with Garlic Sauce: 950 calories and 27g fat

But also, according to Slimming World, a reasonable size portion of Chicken Chow Mein was the lowest Syns, but be careful because they can be sometimes really greasy depending on which takeaway you get them from.

Personally, I get the Chicken chow mein because I like it :D

Chow mein wouldn't be my choice because the noodles are all through it and hard to separate. I'd prefer to choose a shrimp or chicken with vegetables, served with boiled rice, and eat very little of the rice.

But really, I'd go for hot and sour soup - my absolute favourite!

Chow mein usually has alot of bean sprouts, and if they are not cooked to death they are good. Over cooked and they are soggy and gross.
