Basic weight training help

I want to start adding in some weight training to my exercise routine but I'm totally out of my depth. I honestly have no idea what to do! I don't go to the gym so I need exercises I can do in my living room. I have some dumbells in various weights (heaviest is 4kg). I also have an exercise ball. What are good exercises to improve abs and arms especially? But honestly whatever is good. So far I've tried planks, crunches and bicep curls but I don't really know if I'm doing them right...

So... what should I be doing as a complete beginner? I've tried googling but there's so much info out there that it's kind of overwhelming. :( Can anyone recommend good websites and direct me to the exercises I should be doing? Especially if they provide detailed instructions for good form. Recommendations for books, videos, DVDs, whatever else you can think of is good too. :)
