Since changing my diet I've noticed that I am using the bathroom more offten, not just peeing but BM's as well.
Is it normal to have a sudden increase in my bowels?

yes, until your body gets use to all the fibre...you're also going to notice an increase in gas and bloating. Just keep drinking tons of water. Things will normal out soon.

Fiber and other things help clear toxins so as long as it's not loose stools all the time (diarrhea) you should be fine, just make sure to drink your water to help keep from getting high fiber constipation.

I am actually the reverse, my BMs have decreased. :( Hoping things go back to normal soon. Don't want to need to use coffee to help. (I am probably averaging 7gs more fiber than I had been eating for the past 2--3 months.)

Nonsense! Spreading false information is /not/ good.

Many people believe that the definition of a normal bowel movement is having 1 movement each day, but that is not true for everyone. There is no rule for frequency of bowel movements, but the general range is from 3 times a day to 3 times a week. Less than 3 movements a week may indicate constipation, and more than 3 watery stools a day could indicate diarrhea.

I poop more now, too. Do not like, however it's better than me being constipated all the time. I poop maybe three times a week, if that. It works for me. -shrugs-

Not quite true. What's normal for one person might not be normal or healthy for another. Some people go three times a week and that's healthy for them. Some go three times a day and that's healthy for them, too. As long as you're hydrated and not having loose BMs, you're OK.
  • I only go once a week I am sorry to much information x

Exactly. Being a mom, poop is important - our pediatrician gave us this exact response. Applies to kids and adults.

That was old information that is still being passed around. It has since been updated to a healthy adult eliminates waste from three times per day to three times per week. What is an indication of a healthy bowel is soft but not watery and not too firm. If you have to struggle to get it out, then you are not getting enough water and fiber. It should pass naturally without pushing.

The colon has very thin walls to aid in the absorbtion of nutrients of the waste product that was not absorbed in the digestive process. Allowing waste to ferment in the colon after all the nutrients have been absorbed means that the body begins to take in the fat, chemicals, etc. that are left in the waste. This can lead to an unhealthy body, higher cholesterol, etc. A normal elimination process helps keep the body in fighting form.

Toxins is the wrong word. You absorb chemicals from the food (because even fresh veggies and fruits can have chemicals), pollutants, undigestible fats, extra lipids, etc. Also, bacteria such as e-coli is often neutralized by the digestive process, but if left in the waste product too long can be absorbed by the body. As long as you are eliminating your waste in a consistent method that is comfortable for your body (2-3 times per week at the least), then it is not as big as a deal. People who are severely constipated are the ones who experience these issues.

Okay that makes sense, I went from every other day or so to suddenly 2-3 times a day.

If you are not drinking enough water, increased fiber intake will result in slower bowel movement despite the fiber because it does bulk up in the system. Also to answer BigDaddyBRC, that is old information. Newer information shows that there is no normal, only an average. People who are healthy with good fiber intake and who drink plenty of water will eliminate waste as few as 3-4 times per week or as often as 2-3 times per day.

If you are getting enough fiber and water, you don't feel bloated or gassy, and when you go it is soft and formed, then as long as you are in there for a bit to get a lot out, then you are fine. I don't think that once a week you would be doing okay though, try upping your fiber and water intake. MFP is super low...you should be getting double what they recommend

Yes it would! I love that old adage, because it is sooooo completely incorrect. It takes 2-3 days for waste to work its way down through your system if you are eating a good diet with plenty of fiber. If you poop out your dinner 30 minutes later, you aren't getting any nutrition!
