Sharp back pain after exercise

I was wondering if anyone has experienced this before:

Every time I breathe in, I experience a sharp twisting kind of pain in the right side of my back - kind of behind the ribs.

It has only started this morning, last night I did body conditioning circuit training (including using hand weights to work the back muscles), yoga (including lots of sitting down bending over with legs straight and together) and cycling. The day before, I did side bends and standing twists with weights.

I've done all these types of exercises before and felt the muscles ache the next day but this is different, the muscles ache but it's a different story when I breathe in, almost like I cant take a full breath because the pain is too sharp.

I had a look on the web to see what other people were experiencing etc and some of the stuff I saw was worrying (lung cancer etc) however I would certainly not go as far as to say that I'm suffering from that.

I have a feeling I pulled something or my lungs are playing up (I'll admit I have been a smoker for 15 years).

Has anyone experienced this before and if so, how was it caused and how long did the pain last? Did you have to go see a doctor?

Thanks in advance.

    You should see a doctor.
  • Hiya,

I had the same symptoms last year though I'd been ill with a flu-big beforehand. Turned out to be mild pleurisy, so as the person above me has said I'd definitely go and see your doctor. It could be something as silly as you've pulled a muscle working out, but considering you've said you're a smoker, I think a trip to your GP is definitely in order.

    Feel better soon xx

Has anyone else any experiences like this before after a vigorous work out by any chance?

Would be interested to hear what happened, before during and after...

Update: back pain has subsisded by about 70% so not too worried now, must have been due to poor form during an exercise or weights. Phew!
