Can someone clarify what this means please?

Say my maintenance is 2000 and to lose a lb a week I cut to 1500 does eating exercise calories mean I take in 2000 on days I'm exercising then burn the 500 off in the gym?

yes, the deficit is already in the calculation but if you listen to MFP's estimates, I would suggest eating 50-75% of the calories back.

Generally If I exercise I burn about 400 based on what the gym equipment says (it asks for my weight, age etc).

When I dont train I eat 1500-1600, when I do train I eat 2000, burn off 400 giving a net of 1600 for the day.

Generally, gym equipment reads high. I would recommend eating between 50-75% of them back.
