Plant-based foods and whole foods

I'm going to suggest that everyone check into eating only plant-based foods and whole foods to help their weight loss and overall health. Just google "plant-based foods" and see what comes up. There are some interesting studies out there. For years now, researchers have been saying that red meat really isn't good for us. I've decided to cut it out completely, since I recently read where red meat has cancer-causing fats in it. I have a girlfriend, who became a vegetarian about 4 years ago, and she has since lost 60 lbs. She feels great and looks wonderful! She says she has more energy now than she did in her 20's. She is 47 now. I'll be 50 this year and I need to feel better than I do. It seems like my body is falling apart on me with foot pains, carpel tunnel, weak bladder, etc. When I get to my goal weight, by eating only plant-based foods & whole grains, I hope most of these issues will disappear.

I'm glad that you found something that works for you. Me personaly I believe in eating whole, clean foods and that includes beef, pork, chicken, and fish, vegetable, dairy, fruits, and whole grains. I like my med rare steak but I don't eat it that often so I feel no need to restrict it.0

Im sorry but I never, ever rely on studies to tell me what is considered this-and-that.... because those studies have nothing whatsoever to do with me as an individual, or you and an individual: they are blanket studies and not something to be taken as hard evidence....
I have plenty of red meat, my complete blood panel is perfectly fine and would rather deal with real experts than a rediculous study that just feeds into the public frenzy. I would believe my Endo, my Derma or my PCP first and foremost because, they have everything to do with me, as an individual and not some stupid study0 -
oh... an my steak must be cooked to a perfect rare/medium rare each and every time...0

I've been plant based since Nov 1st 2011.
It really works for what I find important and that's heart health.
I don't mind anyone dismissing a plant based approach, but please do not call it extreme. Eating plants is not extreme. Triple bypass surgery on the other hand is pretty extreme.0 -
If you go plant-based be sure you're taking protein combinations to make the complete protein package or you may get very sick. Only animal products have complete protein (i.e. all the amino acids you need in one spot). If eating plants you have to be careful to combine sources.
For every study that says one food is bad for you, there's another that will say the opposite. Common sense tells me to eat omnivorously - just as evolution built us. Your entire fuel intake system from teeth to colon is designed by nature to process and metabolize both plant and meat sources. Who am I to argue with millions of years of natural selection?0 -
Completely plant based eating here. :^) I've been vegan for two years and my stomach problems have disappeared.0

CGWatson, I have one hell of a honkin' huge smoker, propane grill and wood-fired grill at-the-ready for the true meat-eater... and I make a bad *kitten* steak marinade and all of my own seasoning rubs for everything that brings the neighbor out for sampling! Come on over! LOL!0 -

That makes no sense.0 -
I used to be a vegan (who used to be vegetarian) but I sort of stopped because I enjoy eating turkey and other poultry. I don't eat it as much because of the sodium factor in most of my favorite poultry items being high in sodium (im talking to you turkey kielbasa). If it works for you then that's great =3 It can be tasty though because you are increasing your intake of vegetables and other things but I think for some people they can get the same results even if they do have some sort of meat, poultry or fish from time to time.0

It makes perfect sense. Studies are nothing but a bunch of collected data from tests they run on unrealistic controls... What good will a study on 6 men in a control group, and 6 men in the test group have when you compare it to women? It happens alot....
Studies are not foolproof and do not take individuality into consideration.0 -
incomplete protein? seriously?

You obviously know very little about nutritional studies.0 -

Interesting link. And yes after a bit of additional research I retract that statement.0 -
It's worked very well for me!0
