I am fairly new to this. I am working out 6 days a week running/walking for 30 minutes and weights for an hour (roughly) Depends how long it takes me to get to alll the machines.
My question is, do I need to slim down with cardio before using weight machines? Example, when I started out, my arms were 13 inches around. I lost down to 11 inches. Since Ive started adding in weights, its going up to 11.5. I DONT want man muscles, I want nice toned arms.
What do I do???

Strength training is the best way to burn fat, and if your are dropping weight by having a calorie deficit it's nearly impossible to build muscle size. Most of the "size" is glycogen and water which is low when dieting. In others don't worry about "man muscles" you also lack the testosterone to build like us.0 -
Start lifting. Start yesterday if possible.
Don't worry about bulking. That's a myth that has become a running joke around here.

i also looked thicker at first when lifting, that's because I still had excess fat, under, around and through the muscle I was reworking.
But as the body fat levels begin to go down more, you will see more an more muscle definition, and lean out.
When you see bulk, you are seeing the fat being pushed up by the muscle that is improving underneath/around it.
It gets better, honest.
My thighs and calves, initially got bigger, as did my arms, but now that my body fat has dropped more (even though I am lifting heavier then ever) I am losing inches again on arms and thighs. And I look leaner also, no jiggles.
However if I flex, its rock hard muscle....so its all good. But relaxed, just look like a women with a nice feminine shape, with some light sculpting.0 -

LOL, YES! THat is what I thought I was going to look like if I continued lifting, haha.0 -
<<<<<<No manly muscle arms here! I'm lifting 18-22lbs (dummy's) each arm ATM. You will not get manly. You will preserve the muscle you have and lose more fat. It's a win win! Go for it! If you don't like your results then stop. Good luck!0

The extra half inch was probably just swelling and/or water which happens after lifting but is temporary.0
