Why do you think this? Piracy is theft. And we crack down on thieves, yeah?
Nothing's free in this world. If you want something, you should pay for it instead of trying to steal it. I'm not familiar with this particular site, but if people were getting pirated stuff off of it, I'm not sorry to see it go. If sites like that didn't exist and prosper, there wouldn't have been any call for SOPA/PIPA to be written, and we wouldn't have to worry about what happens if they get passed.
It's not the same as actually stealing someone's ****, it's more like sharing your **** about and borrowing someone elses. If I buy a DVD, CD or book, I'll lend it to my friends.... File sharing is just the same but on a bigger scale. I get it, it's illegal, but morally is it any different from a library? They were considered a good thing, you know, information for all not just those who can afford it

Right, but if you lend somebody a CD, there's still only one CD floating around, and you'll want your friend to give it back, and if they still want it, they have to buy their own. If you rip it and distribute it to 100 people, you don't have to ask for it back, and everybody can keep it forever and ever instead of buying their own. That's the difference.0 -
Stealing is stealing. If it's not yours, don't take it. It doesn't matter whether you're stealing from a poor person or a rich person -- YOU are still doing the wrong thing.
Interesting.
I hope thats your photo of peppers in your display pic....................
Actually, it is. Not sure what you're getting at.
Because if it wasn't yours and you didn't have permission, you would've stolen it.
Riiiiight, but... it is mine. I took it a few days ago. I don't steal pictures. As a photographer, stealing makes me sad face.
It's copyright infringement. While that includes piracy and downloading movies/television to share. That would also include if some person was singing a popular song and uploaded it on youtube. And by youtube allowing people to upload those videos the government could have that site taken down and the person could possibly be arrested and tossed into jail for it.
I don't like piracy, I just think that people possibly getting arrested for things like that is ridiculous. I'm not trying to argue with you. Just quoting you for relevancy.0 -
All this talk of piracy reminds me
we should all be really glad that people arent calling memes piracy...yet0 -

Yeeeesssss... I'm not really sure why you're telling me that. I know. And I don't infringe copyright. I have, however, had my work stolen PLENTY of times, so I'm well aware of what it is.0 -

Please pay me my 1000$ now. Or I'll have you arrested.0 -

I was putting it in a quote for relevancy to my statement. Said that in the edit.0 -

I feel awful for Richard O'Dwyer. I'm glad that billionaire though will be covering his legal fees.

Sorry, have to jump in there.....I think capax was writing that for the purpose of people like me who are a little backwards in understanding what this is all about.
Cleared a few things up anyway. I'm starting to get it.
Thanks for making it a little clearer anyhow.0 -

Right, that's true, but if they don't want to keep it forever, they just want to watch the DVD or read the book, only one has been paid for but a boat load of people have watched it / read it (I know, slightly different with music as you don't tend to listen to music just once... unless it's crap... but hey ho).
I just don't see how watching a movie for free that's going to make a boat load of money anyway is the same as stealing someone's personal stuff. There's all this hoo-ha that piracy is killing the industries... I dunno, they still keep churning them out and to be honest, some of the stuff they churn out is not worth the entrance fee to watch! I doubt I'd get a refund if I saw a movie that sucked! Maybe if I ran into Tom Hanks I've paid for enough crap, I don't feel bad about getting some for free0 -

I do see what you're saying. But most people do watch that movie again, and listen to that CD again, etc. If I go to a friend's house and I watch a movie there, that's sharing. But if I like it, and I want to watch it again, I'll buy it.
A huge part of the issue is that "intellectual property" such as art, music, movies, etc. aren't really seen in the same way as, say, a tv. A tv is a tangible thing, and if you steal my tv, nobody would ever question the fact that what you did was stealing. There might be questions as to whether *you* were the thief, and somebody might say I had it coming because I'm too rich and that tv was pocket change for me. But in the end, it was stolen, and nobody questions that. But art, music, and movies are seen as "entertainment" rather than "property." And they ARE entertainment, but somebody worked to create them. They put forth their time and energy and creativity and money to create these things. It was created to be distributed, yes, but it's only fair that they get paid for their work by the people who enjoy that work.0 -

Cheers for that......bit of a downer. Very controversial. God knows what's gonna happen.0 -
F***K NO!! How the hell am I going to watch my Stargate now?
lol. That's how I was watching NCIS until I got a virus. Have all 8 seasons on DVD now. The bigger issue is how I'll have access to Dr. Who without a TV and BBC America?0 -
Piracy is not theft
Here's a (very brief) helpful guide:

Getting over the fact Its gonna be harder watching my programmes - all of which I have to say I can watch here on UK TV (i like to watch them on the net before it airs here in the uk, which really is silly). I'll just have to wait up to three weeks longer..
But getting over all that.....the enormity of all this piracy, copyrighting, infringement etc etc issue is huge...Realise its always been a major issue and I realise there has to be controls put in place, but really, i have to agree with people who want to share home videos or even educational material through legitimate sites. This affects every social networking site too, doesn't it?
I agree with alot of it (from what I now understand), but some of it is bonkers.
Anyway, off to watch some tv on my laptop......through a legite site (itv player). Oh god, I don't feel safe clicking on anything right now.0 -
The jerks that ran this site were just as bad as movie production companies, and kept chat logs where they talked crap about making money off copyrighted stuff. Im sorry, but they deserved this.0

Great Video to watch, I realize its an opinion, but its an interesting one!0 -
I read this on the Oatmeal today. This pretty much sums up how I feel about piracy.
