HRM affecting equipment at gym

I have a polar FT4 that I use whenever I workout to calculate my calories burned. I recently have started going to the gym, (Planet Fitness), I use it there when I workout. I went today when it was really busy and during my run, the gentleman beside me tapped my shoulder. He asked me if I was using a HRM and I said yes. I didn't realize that the machines are Polar and they pick up my HRM. So it displayed my heart rate on the three machines around me. The man beside me was freaking out because he was walking and it said his heart rate was 175 and then he realized so did mine. I turned my HRM off at his request (I wasn't upset about it).I checked my settings and I couldn't find a way to not have it interact with the machines. I asked the worker about it and his response was to use the hand things. I can't run and keep my hands on the monitors. Had anyone had this happen to them? Any suggestions so that I might still be able to use my HRM?

Thank You,
Jen

This has happened with my husband and I. We both wear monitors and mine gets into his machine - but not his into mine. Weird. Anyway, I don't know how to turn it off because I have heard that Polars send a strong signal. My only suggestion would be to find a machine with no one around. I know that can be hard at times but I don't know any other alternative other than maybe running outside if you can.
