does anyone know what the benefits of a gluten free diet is?

unless you have a gluten intolerance/celiac's disease, the only benefit from not eating wheat is reducing your carbs. but completely cutting them out is not terribly recommended if it's only for carb's sake! just eat in moderation.
edited to add - diabetics & people w/ blood sugar issues should also watch out, since carbs affect them differently (again, not to say that wheat/barley/gluten-containing foods are the ONLY carbs out there)
so assuming you're healthy... I'd say it's not necessary to avoid gluten.0
