I have a MIO HRM that I bought several years ago & decided to dust it off. I put in a new battery and updated all my personal information (female, 182lbs and 43 yrs) and set out for a 90 minute walk outside at a moderate rate with some slight inclines. I took reading throughout the walk. On average it keeps stating that I burn about 600 calories that seems high compared to MFP.

I'm thinking there's something wrong & I need a new HRM? What are your thoughts? Is there a way to verify the accuracy?

Just worried that I might put my body in starvation mode OR over eat calories??
Would like any input. Thanks

If it doesn't have a chest strap then you need to stop using it until you are able to buy one with a chest strap.

HRM's that don't have a chest strap are notorious for being inaccurate because they only get your heart rate when you touch the watch, and thus base the calorie count off of that. So if you touch it once and it says 90, it's going to base the calorie count off of that 90 until you touch it again and up date it.

HRM's that have a chest strap on the other had, continuously feed the data to the watch. So it tracks all changes in heart rate automatically and thus are far more accurate.

I'd suggest looking into Polar... They are the best for HRM's.

I would try it over a few different exercises to see how those compare. I have a Mio Drive+ (ill be upgrading to a Polar FT4) that I do like and I feel that it is fairly reliable and close to the HR reading that I get on cardio machines so it may be accurate for a 90 minute walk. www.bodytronics.com has Polar FT4 for $60, and FT7 for like $75 if you feel like putting a little money in to a new more reliable watch

edit: I frequently check my HR during a workout so I felt like I would get a reliable reading
