I found this on a EatingWell article on how to calculate how many calories you should consume a day in order to lose weight.

Calculate your calorie goal

YOUR CURRENT WEIGHT X 12 = calories needed to maintain your weight

To lose 1 pound/week: Cut 500 calories/day
To lose 2 pounds/week: Cut 1,000 calories/day

Note: For healthy weight loss, we don't advise losing more than two pounds per week. If you calculate a daily calorie goal that's less than 1,200, set your calorie goal at 1,200 calories. Below that, it's hard to meet your nutrient needs—or feel satisfied enough to stick with a plan.

    Thank you for this. I have been so confused. MFP says I should only eat 1270, but when I do my own calculations it's more around 1500. By these calculations it is also close to the 1500.
    I weigh 173
    173x12=2076
    to lose 1 lb a week 2076-500=1576 ........ so that means I should actually be eating closer to 1500 to lose 1 lb a week. I have to admit, figuring out how many calories I should eat is more of a pain/struggle than actually eating right/exercising. ;)
