Hi, So I bought a new HRM and used it in the gym for the first time today. It has my height, weight, age etc and has a band that goes around my waist to measure my heart rate.

So I burned around 700 calories (according to the HRM) this morning, but I feel like I burned less....Can you trust a HRM?

What kind of exercise did you did and what brand of HRM is it?

Timex's are notorious for being inaccurate while Polar tends to be pretty spot on in estimating calories.

If you did a pretty intense workout then you may burn 700 calories.. if it was more low impact then it may be inflated.
  • I did interval running and some weights and tummy work... the interval running certainly does get my heart rate up though!

Its just a Kelly Holmes branded one..

Just would like to know if it is even close to being accurate so that I know how much work I am doing.

I've never heard of Kelly Holmes.. so I couldn't help you there.

What I do know though is most HRM's are only accurate for things like steady state cardio(Ie walking, running, cycling, etc).

Things like weight training they are not accurate for because there are too may variables to predict and sometimes it will look like you are taking up more oxygen when it's really pressure from lifting weights and that will throw the calorie reading off.
  • Oh cool. I might just use it when I am doing cardio and see how that goes.

    Thanks for the advice :D

The band is supposed to go around your chest, not waist, unless this is some strange HRM that I have not seen before.
  • i have a target HRM from argos....used it for first time in the gym yesterday.....i burned 460 calories in 70 mins doing 35 mins on treadmill...10 mins bike..5 mins cross trainer....5 mins rower...15 mins weights...hope that helps...im thinking about upgrading to the polar very soon.

I have a polar ft4 with a chest strap. I feel it is pretty accurate. During a good 60 minutes of cardio it says I burn 500 or over calories. I feel that is pretty accurate. Slightly lower than the fitness machines at the gym but thats ok.

I would invest in a polar they seem to be most accurate..in my opinion.. best investment I made thus far
