Too much too quickly?

I have been on my diet/workout scheme for about a week and a half and have lost 7.5lbs. I am concerned this is too much weight to loose in such a short amount of time. I am not doing any mega excercises or starving myself, just making moderate adjustments to my portion sizes and introducing strengthening excercises. Any opinions?

If you have a LOT to lose, it comes off in larger chunks to start with. If you're near your optimal weight, then that would be a concern. It all depends how much weight you have to lose and how much fluid you were retaining.

I'm 5' 10' and was at 175. I used to be very atheletic but the past few years have become sedentary. The rate of loss is slowing, so it may be water loss.
  • Don't worry, that sometimes happens to me, too. I'm only on day two here, and I would imagine by the end of this week I'll be down as much as five pounds. A lot of that is going to be water, because now that I'm eating healthier, I'm not retaining as much water.

What I do is get a bodyfat caliper and measure how much my bodyfat percentage changes over time. I'll probably use that once a week. That is a better indication of what you are really losing. And it is useful for me because my lean mass is greater than what the BMI chart says I should weigh total. If I only looked at weight, I'd end up starving myself to get to a weight that is very unhealthy for me.
