My best girl friend is expecting, and I am SO excited. I want to make her a very special gift basket for her and baby. She doesn't want to know the gender until the very big day, so ideas for mummy and baby would be wonderful.
You would think I would have idea's seeing as how i'm a muma myself, but I'm lost.
Any suggestions?

Got her things she will need or will run out of quickly, one of those thermometers that you just swipe across the baby's forehead, desitin, baby powder, diapers, wipes, etc.0

You could do a basket just for her - include things like some nice soaps or bubble bath, some nice lotion and a gift card for her. Something to make her feel special.
You could do a basket that has things the new moms might forget to buy, burp clothes, lansinoh (if she's breastfeeding), baby first aid kid, rattle, sophie the giraffe (I love this toy for some reason).
When I had my kids, I was grateful to my neighbors for bringing over food for us. Nothing too elaborate, just something nice and warm because in those first few days, I did NOT want to cook.0 -
Every good mummy needs a sarcophagus and maybe a sphinx :-p0

My favorite for baby showers are the diaper cake which you can personalize... they are so cute!0

Yes!!! Those thermometers are the best A gift cert for babies first pictures is also a great gift. Stuff for the hospital is also good. Instead of a basket why don't you put it in a duffel bag.. Hand cream, lip balm, sanitizer and a box of "soft" tissues All 4 things i sent the hubby out to get after i had my little guy0 -
Make her a nappy cake!

Dead easy to make yourself. Just layers of rolled up nappies wrapped in snuggly blankets, lots of ribbon with baby items slotted inside.0 -
My "standard" gift is a little odd, but really helpful (a friend gave these things to me way back when) -- first, a laundry basket for the baby stuff.
Add a jug of Dreft and another of baby stain remover.
A couple of shakers like you would use for protein shakes -- to mix up powdered formula for bottles and protein shakes for her when nursing.
Small glass bowls - half a dozen, 4-6 oz each -- for baby food in the first year and kid-size portions form then on. We still use them for portion control of maple syrup, ketchup, m&m's, and the like.
Two mesh lingerie laundry bags - one for little socks, one for the bibs. The socks get lost and the velcro on the bibs sticks to everything otherwise. As they grew, I transitioned my kids to larger bags, and they sort their socks and underwear as they go so I don't have to when they come out of the dryer.
Very absorbent cloth diapers to serve as burp cloths. If you're crafty, put some ribbon or other decoration along the edge. I still use them for wiping up messes, and my kids are 8 and 12.0
