Advice on knee supports

Hiya,
Just after a few opinions really!
I have a weak knee, yet I exercise quite a lot, around 5 times a week for at least an hour a time, sometimes 2....
Since I started road running I found my right knee to be very weak, and if I overdo it, my knee tends to give way, and I find it aches for a day or so afterwards... Right on the top of my kneecap...
Please don't tell me to go light on the exercise - I do watch what I'm doing - ie limit my squat weight, watch my lunge repetition etc, but I just wondered if wearing a knee support would help me?
I do a mix of cardio - circuit training, running, cross-trainer, spin classes... And usually find the cross-trainer the worst, which surprises me?
Will wearing a knee support hinder my movement too much? Or are they just a waste of money and I just need to rest more?
