Heres the deal, I went to speak with a clinical dietician and broke it all down for her whats going on.

Possibly Celiacs Disease and boarderilne hypothroidism on top of hypotension and a low dose beta blocker for an irregular heart rythm. All bring my heart rate low and so forth.

So I asked her what to do and everytime I eat over 1000cal. a day I gain weight, and I tried her suggestion of a min. 1500 cal. intake and I've done nothing, but gained weight the past 3weeks or so. I can understand her method behind, but its not making sense to me and she said I need to workout 60min. a day and never clarified in what sense as to weight training or cardio, and how intense?

I'm looking for someone who has the simliar problems I am facing. I need ideas and suggestions that work and not just a guess.

Any help would be appreciated at this point to try. I'm tired of starving my body and when I try to do 1500cal. intake and excerise a min. 3x a week at least 30-40mins I still gain weight. I just want to lose 20lbs.

Are you drinking enough water? Do you take thyroid meds?
  • Yes, I drink enough water and they haven't started treating the thyroid yet with meds, with everything else going on.

What are your " quick calorie " adds?

If you have low thyroid, you may not be able to lose weight until that is taken care of.

    Kolacky are not GF.
  • I hardly eat sweets that was my treat for the week and I burned it all off exercising.

I'm on meds for just about everything you have plus psych meds that are notorious for weight gain and I gained my first two weeks on here. My doctor told me it's because my body wasn't used to the change and was screaming for dear life to hold onto the water and calories I was consuming. Maybe something similar is happening with you?

Have you recently started a GF diet for the Celiac? I gained weight when I was diagnosed with Celiac because my stomach was finally able to repair itself & absorb nutrients correctly. I am struggling to lose weight now.

I wasn't mentioning sweets. I just thought it was strange that you eat GF breakfast but then eat kolacky which are NOT GF. I have a friend who is TERRIBLY sick if she gets gluten.

I asked what your " quick add " calories were. If they were HIGH in sodium, you might be retaining a ton of water ( 10 potato chips made me " gain " 3 lbs. )

You need to get your thyroid regulated. I gained even while eating 1200 calories until they got my meds corrected. Now I am losing. Also if you have a gluten allergy or celiac and eat gluten or wheat you can retain fluid which will also make you show a gain on the scale.

Please get on the right medicine and make sure you are taking all your meds correctly. I have hypothyroidism from Hashimotos disease and if I am not on my meds (or before I started on my thyroid medication), it didn't matter how I ate. I could gain 5 lbs in a week eating just like I did the previous week. There are so many things that slow down - your overall metabolism (how much you burn just sitting down, or when sleeping), your digestive system, every other system in your body slows down thus burning way less than other people. Your body retains more fluid - it's just a mess.

Make sure you go to a endocrinologist or preferably a DO (an osteopath) and get everything else straightened out. Nutritionist is good too but when your body is not functioning the way it is supposed to, nutrition only takes you so far, you need a doctor too.

I have read that it takes about 3 to 4 weeks to "reset" you metabolism when you increase your caloric intake and that you will gain weight during this time - you said you've been doing this for 3 weeks, so that falls in line.

I'm hypothyroid (have moderately low BP because of that, but not considered hypotensive), and have struggled with my weight because of it. Depending on the lab used for your thyroid tests, and your doctor's interpretation of those results, your "borderline" could be "actual" hypothyroidism and requires medication. Putting it off can make the situation worse and more difficult to get under control. However, thyroid meds can increase your heart rate, so working in conjunction with your cardiologist is a must for your situation.

By the way, if you DO have Celiac Disease (rather than just being gluten intolerant), get checked for Hashimoto's Disease - autoimmune diseases tend to run in multiples, and this is a pretty common combination.

As for working out, I would do cardio 5 days a week at a moderate intensity where you're sweating and getting your heart rate up to a level approved by your cardiologist. Beta blockers will affect the manner in which your heart rate acts.

Do weightlifting 2 to 3 days a week (on non-consecutive days leaving a day in between sessions) of total body strength training lifting heavy weights. You won't get bulky - it's very hard for us women to get that bodybuilder physique, and those that have it spend a LOT of time getting there with special diets and what not, so do not think you can't lift heavy weights because you dont want to look like that - you just wont! :) Increasing muscle mass is the best way to increase your sluggish metabolism which will make fat loss easier (note, I didn't say weight loss). Lifting heavy weights will build this muscle mass the fastest. Unless you participate in sports where muscle endurance is required, lift heavy weights to failure (you lift 8 reps and you can't lift the 9th time).

While I don't have the heart problem, I do have Hashimoto's and know how a thyroid can ruin all of this and make you gain weight even when you eat "nothing". Good luck!
