It's beginning to feel a lot like guilt...

I have been doing so good with my diet and excercise. Today I cheated and now I feel defeated. I swam today and burned over 1200 calories from it so I was famished and craving something sweet. I scarfed down several dark chocolate pieces and now I have this unbelievable amount of guilt. Any one else feel this way when they have a bad day?

Just to clarify the only sweets I allow myself on this diet is fruit and greek yogurt.

A little of what you fancy is no bad thing. The only thing to avoid is binging. Keep at it sounds like you are doing well.

It seems like your diet is pretty strict! You deserved it :) Not only do you usually stick to a very clean eating plan, but you burned a lot of calories as it is. Guilt is normal, we've all felt it after what we consider to be a binge. But don't dwell too much. You should be proud of yourself and ready to get back on your track tomorrow!
  • I don't think you should feel bad. You earned the extra calories with exercise and you one had some pieces not a BLOCK! Forgive yourself and move on. Your doing great!

Log the choc, I bet it won't amount to much. Also, are you eating your exercise calories back?
  • I have been there...in fact, I just did this but with a small slice of red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting---bad bad bad! BUT I worked out today and have been on a good roll of eating well. Dark Chocolate is NOT THAT BAD FOR YOU, they actually say to eat it. DO NOT DEPRIVE YOURSELF OF SWEETS and some unhealthy foods--make sure you just eat them in moderation. You CAN do this, and it's OKAY!! :)

EVERYONE deserves some cheat days! Remember this is a lifestyle not a diet. You should have room on your life for a treat. Is life not meant to be enjoyed? Food is the same while it is a necessary part of everyday LIFE/LIVING it should also be enjoyed. You eat something you feel that may have done a little damage then do damage contol. (an extra walk/run or some dancing! etc.) You have all the necessary tools at your finger tips to keep you on the path to a happy healthy you. Want dessert from time to time? have it. Just make sure you are accountable for what you eat and how you plan to counter act any negative effects you feel it may have!

Out of a supposed 2400 calories that you would be allowed today as a minimum - I think you are setting yourself up for long term failure if you feel guilt over eating 135 calories of chocolate (that's based on 5 squares of chocolate I know) and are restricting yourself to only allowing yourself certain things as treats.

This is why I hate the word "cheat" or "cheat day" it has such a bad connotation to it. As christina0089 said - this is a lifestyle, not a diet. You are going to consume things that have more calories than others, and that's just the way it goes. Log everything and eat everything in moderation. Get rid of the guilt! There is no need to beat yourself up - look at the positive that you burned 1200 calories instead of the negative. :)

I know exactly how you feel. I have been having these off and on cravings and I just don't want to give in to them because I know I will feel like a failure if I give in (no offense to anyone). Often times in the past whenever I gave into my cravings I just get out of control and I say to heck with it all. I know this isn't the right attitude but this is the reason why I'm here as well, to help gain self control and learn that it's okay just get back up again.

Thanks everyone. I am currently on the 17 day diet and really focusing on losing a significant amount of weight before Aug 15th(when I lose my medical insurance). I just have always had the personality where I dwell on guilt. I am working on it. Thanks for the encouragement and keep on rocking the weight loss everybody!

And to Chanels_mom- I couldnt have said it any better that is very similar to myself!
