it sounds pretty low, what did he set his weight loss per week goal at, 2lbs? i think he could start off losing at around 2,000 cals and then he can adjust as needed

Men should really be at 1800 at the min so they dont lose muscle.
  • Does seem a bit low. I'm on 1500 a day and a lot shorter than him

Men should really be at 1800 at the min so they dont lose muscle.

1500 net is the recommended floor for a man the way 1200 is for a woman but for someone his size 1500 seems low. How much weight does he have to lose. Here is a guide for setting healthy weight loss goals that will help him retain lean muscle provided he gets enough protein and does strength training:
If you have 75+ lbs to lose 2 lbs/week is ideal,
If you have 40-75 lbs to lose 1.5 lbs/week is ideal,
If you have 25-40 lbs to lose 1 lbs/week is ideal,
If you have 15 -25 lbs to lose 0.5 to 1.0 lbs/week is ideal, and
If you have less than 15 lbs to lose 0.5 lbs/week is ideal.

And after choosing the proper weight loss goal, he should also be eating back the calories he burnes from exercise. So if it ends up that MFP recommends say 1750 (based on new goal) and he burns 400 in the gym, then he should eat 2150 (1750+400) in order to lose the goal amount of weight, and to avoid a too large caloric deficit.

    Failte Sabmur!

At 6ft 2" he sounds quite slim already. I'm only 5'10" and targeting about 200lbs (although I am quite broad), down from current 220lbs.

What is he targeting? 1,500 cals a day is typically looking to lose 2lbs a week. If he is only trying to shed the last 10-20lbs of fat then he won't be able to do it that fast. Try the goal seek again targeting only 1lbs or even 0.5lbs a week. He should probably be eating +2000 cals and I'd suggest upping the exercise to earn those intake cals.

He might be looking to lose fat and add muscle for a better body shape - MFP less sophisticated for these goals - but again he will need a lot more cals and more training, but MFP is handy to keep track of intake.

    Hope that helps.
Hope you know the cals in the Guinness!

I had to google that phrase! Failte is the extent of my irish!

Yeah I think he'll need to take it slower and once you get down that low there is little alternative but hard training. He will stall his metabolism if he eats that little. Keep off the carbs and up the protein. Tell him to go buy a pack of lean chicken breast right now before he fades away.

    I'd also highly recommend P90X

with only 10 lbs to lose his goal should be 0.5lbs/week, which will probably put him over 2000 cals/day.

FYI: Guinness has one of the lowest calories for regular (non lite beer). This is due to lower sugar, since it is not carbonated it needs less, and the lower alcohol content 4.2% ABV.
