I see a lot of questions about shin splints, especially from new runners. They plagued me when I first started running. So, I wrote an article about them and a way to solve them that worked for me. Feel free to check it out http://muffintopnomore.com/shin-splints-the-simple-solution/
Hope it helps someone.

Nice article. Too often the adage is true... Too Much, Too Soon!

I usually recommend people have a good hard look at their footwear first and get professionally fitted. Make sure the person who is fitting you examines your gait, wear pattens on your shoes and you have an adequate fit.

Relief for shin splints can also come from deep tissue massage, and ice massages.

I had shin splints couple of months ago that were pretty severe that it would hurt even with normal walking. So I had to totally quit running and did other forms of cardio. Last week ( after 3-4 months) of not running, I started back up and doing a gradual increase in speed and it has definitely helped. Planning on taking it slow to reach the speed I want to run at.
