Do you have one in your office?
So, the boss is on vacation this week and it never fails, we have one guy that alwyas takes advantage of the boss being away.
We only get 30 mins for lunch because we work a 4 day week, any way, today he took an hour+ for lunch. I can almost gurantee that he will have a reason to leave early every day this week. Last week he called in the day after St. Patty's day he was sick. The day before, he told me he was having a party at his house and would probably be too hung over to come in. So he was supposed to work on Friday to make up for that day. Well he did come in but "had to leave early for a meeting". Geeshhh, every frickin time the boss is away. I am the one who turns in payroll so I kind of have to keep track of these things (we are on salary). I feel like if I don't say anything, he is cheating the company out of money but if I do say something then I am being a tattle tail. What should I do? My boss is so sweet and understanding and we can usually take off anytime we want so I feel bad that he is taking advantage of this. I feel like I need to watch out for the boss' sake. What do you think?

Well, I think that if your job is to do payroll, then it would be your job to inform the boss when these things happen. I use to do payroll, now we out source and I would always let the boss know when things weren't right.
The employee will only get away with things so long as no one steps in.
Hope this helps and I hope you have a better day.0 -
OMG, do I?! Only he takes advantage even while the boss is here!! He is constantly walking around, "looking busy" but my boss is so flighty sometimes that she doesn't seem to notice. Or his lack of performance as well. Everyone comes to me with all of their issues with stuff he did wrong and it makes double to work for me!! So frustrating! I totally feel your pain.0

That's a tough one but since you do payroll I would think you've got a duty to record the hours worked accurately. Does the boss look at the payroll/timecards? If someone else decided to tell the boss and he found out you were covering for the slacker would you not also be in trouble?0

I say tell the truth. Everything eventually works out when you tell the truth. As crappy as being the tattle-tale is, you are not there to make friends, you are there to work and do the job that you are being paid for the best that you can. Easier said than done right?
Unfortunately I have an office full of those. Every time my boss so much as leaves the office they all gather around and chat, not doing any work until he comes back, when he is on vacation... NOTHING gets done, and everybody comes and goes whenever they feel like it.
Good luck! :flowerforyou:0 -
I say you need to let the boss know what is going on. You don't want to get into trouble for not reporting it since you do the payroll0

Rules vary based on exempt/ non-exempt status.
However, a whole day off is unacceptable.
If you are doing payroll, you have to do something.
Talk to that sweet boss. Let them know your situation.0 -
Ooooh, my passive-aggressive mind is working!!
Just put him down for a day of PTO (or whatever your vacation time is called).
Don't mention it to anyone. Let them approach you later.
I mean, he wasn't in the office that day so you'd have to assume he was on PTO, right?0 -
Do you have one in your office?
And yes, we have that one in my old area.
My old boss.
Would stroll in at 9am on an 'early day', leaving at 3:30p or 4p.
Would come in at 11:30a other days, to go to lunch at 12p, returning at 2p, leaving by 4:30p.
Or my favorite -- would arrive at 8:45a stinking of the alcohol she consumed partying the night before, take a lunch, then go to the parking garage and TAKE A NAP IN HER CAR before leaving early for the day so she could go out and party more that night.0 -
If you are in charge of payroll, and he is making fraudulent claims on his hours worked, it is your responsibility to notify the employer. If he is on salary, maybe some of the other employees should voice there observances as well. Best of luck always...

Generally speaking, being salaried/exempt, you are required to work hours in both halves of the day (before and after lunch). How many hours is not stated legally. Therefore, as long as you show up at some point in the morning and stay for some amount of time after lunch, you are covered. You can't be fired for not working 8a-5p, persay.
The way around this is to put a reasonable (or heavy, if you like) workload on someone. If they aren't working 40 hours a week, their workload and job performance would suffer. Then they could be fired for that reason, not their slacking off and not working 40 hours per week.
I've never seen it done. I am surrounded by salaried slackers, with a couple decent 40 hour a week salaried folks around (I can only think of one actually). Being hourly keeps me honest, I suppose.0
