Carbs vs. Sugars

So, as a diabetic I have been taught to watch my carbohydrates religiously. So, here I have made it a macro but I also added sugar. I am usually in range on carbs that my dietitian gave me but I am curious about those pesky sugars. How important are they in weight loss? Are they a macro that I really must worry about if my carbs are pretty low? Most of my sugars come from fruit, salad dressings, etc. and are usually at -10. I'd love some wisdom!
