Need advice on weight training

I started jogging/walking and want to start using the weight machinesI
Is it best to use light weight and alot of reps? Or heavy weights with low reps? How many reps? and sets? I have no idea!!!!
i want to strenghten and tone.

    Heavy lifting with 8-12 reps.
    this will help build strength and maintain any lean mass while dieting down.
