ive always been a boredom/emotional eater and yday and this morning proved that!
was going good yday morn then lunchtime hit and i had a subway (wasnt too unhealthy, tuna with loads of salad and light mayo) then i got home and was bored so ate almost a 150g bag of kettle chips even tho i wasnt hungry, and later on for dinner i had a big cheesy garlic bread to myself even tho again i wasnt that hungry! went to bed feeling really sick and woke up the same this morning. thought id be able to sort myself out but ended up chowing down on 3 packets of crisps yet again for no reason and i wasnt hungry!! i then force myself to do extra exercises to counteract what ive eaten but that doesnt seem to be working!!
what is wrong with me!! i know im not hungry but yet i still cant stop myself from eating what evers handy!! i feel ive just ruined my first week and feel like ill never be able to change these bad habits :(

  • here is a helpful tip. when you want to eat, do it at the table. pull out a plate, fork, knife and napkin. put the food on the plate and eat at the table. by doing this every time you eat you are forced to think for a moment "am i really doing this because i am hungry or am i doing this because i am bored?"
i do the same thing sometimes too. if you are hungry you will eat and know that you have to clean up, if you aren't you hopefully wont eat and will instead find something else to do, like go for a walk, watch a movie or catch up with a friend.
    i hope this helps!!!

A lot of people mistake hunger for thirst. If it is thirst then regardless of how much you eat, you still won't satisfy your thirst and you could continue to eat more.

Similar to what the previous poster said, you could try asking yourself "am i actually hungry or am i just thirsty?"

Also it is very easy to go on a diet and not eat enough, then end up overeating. So try making sure you are eating small healthy meals/snacks throughout the day.
  • I'm in the similiar situation...I KNOW i'm not hungry, but will consume large amounts of calories because its there....I wish you luck to find the healthy balance..we can DO THIS!!

Aw It is your first week. You are allowed some setbacks while you are learning. Take what you are learning about how/when/why/what you are eating and use that knowledge as you move forward.
My tip is to make the crap food less "handy". Get it out of the house! I would be much less likely to munch on chips if I had to go to the market to get them instead of them looking at me in the pantry tempting me.

Don't buy or keep anything in your cupboards that is going to lead you into temptation! Replace all the junk with healthier snacks. Popcorn, pretzels, fruit bars etc.
If you are an emotional eater (which I am too), recognise what triggers the eating. You might want to think about chatting to someone about your emotions to get it off your chest. Emotional eating has made me what I am today..... 60lbs overweight. I have tried to please the whole world, tried to be the perfect mother, tried to be the perfect business owner... Now, this year - I say to hell with that! I'll be the best I can be but it's going to be about me too.
You need to gain control over your life first before putting yourself under more stress and trying to lose weight. You must WANT to lose weight and realise that it is only you that can be held accountable for your success.

Good luck... looking forward to seeing your tracker move towards your personal goal!!
  • I know how you feel, I'm the exact same way, but if you need anything just message me or something! Cause I'll be here for you, us sisters gotta help each other out! Lol

Maybe you were denying yourself these foods for a while and your body craved them so much that you ate them in excess? That happens to me when I set my calories too low or don't allow myself "treats" at all. I end up going crazy on them and find it hard to get back on track.

I totally understand!!! You will get back on track. I have been on and off the wagon loads of times. Just keep tracking your food even if you cheat. The good thing is there is always a new day. If you mess up in the morning get back on the wagon in the afternoon. Don't think because you messed up you need to eat badly the rest of the day. I have just recently started over and a few days in. It's a rough road back but getting there one day at a time and you can do it.

I really try hard to be positive. When I feel negative, I try to find something positive and it changes how I feel about what's got me down. Don't beat yourself up about having a bad day, think of it as something you learned and know that you can make different choices from this point on!

    Good luck!

I would like to add that IT HAPPENS TO EVERYONE!! It gets easier as the weeks go by, you stop craving these things. It helps too, if you allow yourself a cheat meal a week. Make it a good one!! You need to learn to forgive yourself if you want to get back on track. Admit what you ate, write it down, stare at it, but you can't beat yourself up about it. It happens. If you can't get over it, then you will do it again, and again, and again. Rome wasn't built in a day. When you take a cup of water out of a pool, it is still a pool. This is a journey, not a marathon. Hope this helps!
  • I think one of the most important things to do is kick the word "diet" out of your life and vocabulary because I know that's what we associate changes in eating and exercise habits as and it's SUCH a hideously negative word! What you're trying to do it eat better to change your body and life. And being human, well, we're not always going to be 100% successful every single day of denying ourselves some overeating, junk food, etc. So you ate a ton more kettle chips that you would have liked? Oh well! Try to do better next time. There are days - I do try to limit them, but they are there - when I eat rather poorly and/or don't work out and I just take it for what it's worth - a day in the life of someone trying to break bad habits. The next day, or the next afternoon or even the next evening I'll start fresh.

I think so many "diets" fail because we unnecessarily label ourselves failures for slip ups.

I am a TOTAL emotional eater. I lost 70+ lb 7 years ago and put (yikes) 50 of them back on because of personal issues. I'm not the sort to turn to exercise/clean eating as a "safe haven." Give me comfort food and pizza and pasta every single time! Hungry or not I would eat just to feel better, but I'm slowing talking myself out of that mentality. Sometimes I fight it like an addiction and sometimes I give in with a smaller quantity. Like, am I going to feel any better for finishing this entire Chick-Fil-A milkshake? I'll receive no more satisfaction for finishing the whole thing that I feel right now, so I'll force myself to throw it away, and then I have a win-win - I had some to satisfy the craving, but I still have the pride of knowing I didn't over-indulge like I would have in the past.

I have so many little tricks and pep talks to get myself away from snacking and in to exercising... The lies and empty promises I give myself to keep me motivated - it's insane! LOL But, I hit my new way of eating 4 months ago and I'm down 33 lb so far, so who says a few white lies are all bad?

Do what you gotta to achieve what you want! You can find it - stay strong, and more importantly, keep on!
