Calcium supplements

I just turned 50 and try to take calcium everyday. I went into one of the health food chains recently and purchased 500mg calcium pills (big enough to choke a horse!) and I tried for 2 weeks to find a way to swallow those things down without choking. Problem is the pills aren't coated and no matter what I do they stick to the sides of my throat and are pure hell- and painful - to wash down because they are so large. WTH? Why do they have to be so big! I've thrown them in the garbage.

This weekend I was at Costco and bought the Chocolate Calcium Chews to give them a try. They actually taste very good and I'm trying to convince myself they they satisfy my cravings for a taste of chocolate every day.

Does anyone out there have any insight into Chews versus pills? What does it mean when you're told your body can't break down a calcium pill as well as a gel or capsule, yet all kinds of vitamins come in pill form. Should I be taking gel/capsules for all the supplements I take?
