Yes - that's what I do during the week, as I have no time for the gym. Keep a brisk pace and you'll break a sweat. I try for 3-4 MPH.

I have not set foot in a gym and have lost 14lbs in the last 10 weeks. However, I live in the mountains and I have set up routes that take me 40 min., 60 min., and 1.5 hours to complete, depending on how much time I have. I do one of these 6 times per week (today I did about 3 hours.) With the hills, I know I'm getting my cardio in.

If you live in a flat area, definiely speed is going to have to be your thing to get your hear rate up. I know I'm not loosing as much as someone who is putting in a solid hour on the eliptical but I'm happy with my progress and my routine. I think this is why I have been sticking to it. I work full time, have two young daughters to take care of and my time is really limited. once I loose the weight, I will get a set of free weights and start weight training at home in addition to contnuing to hike.

The downside is that since i don't burn as many calories on most days, I can't really go too much over my daily calorie goal. :grumble:
