Am I losing weight too fast?

Okay, so here's the deal.

I started this weighting 168 lbs on January 13th. I started working out last week (worked out three times burning between 300 and 400 calories per work out doing cardio using the elliptical and the treadmill). I've been eating pretty healthy, but I think I've only stayed below the 1200 calorie goal once. I go over by at least a couple hundred calories everyday. I eat three meals a day; these meals are decent size portions. I still eat chips and other bad things for me occasionally. And, I usually eat some of the calories that I exercise off back too.

I know when you start working out and dieting that you lose between two and five pounds the first week, but that would still mean that I've lost four pounds this week alone and this week isn't even over yet. I don't think that's normal or good. For example, I weight 164 on the 19th and now I weight 159. Is that normal to lose that much in such a short period?

I feel weird asking this question, I know some people have trouble losing weight and I don't seem to be having any at all which is great I just wanted to make sure that it was okay in terms of being healthy. I'm not overworking myself when I work out and I'm not starving myself, so I feel that I'm just getting lucky in terms of losing the weight quickly, but I wanted to check to be sure because I'm not at that familiar with this kind of thing.

Often in the first week of changing your diet you do lose lot more on the scales and then it settles down . I find the first weight I lose is a lot of retained fluid and also I am cleaning out my system ( bowel) so its this weight gone too.

If you are eating well, drinking water and exercising as you say then it sounds normal to me. Make sure you are eating enough to cover the energy needs needed for exercising,

I see the first weeks loss as a bonus and then accept a lower weekly loss as normal after that,

Good luck and keep up the great work.

I agree. You will lose a lot in the beginning and it is normal...just don't get used to it! It is mainly water you are losing and will level off quickly.

I agree with the above, in my first week I lost 8 lbs and in the second lost 2lbs. Stick to what your doing as long as your eating healthy, often and feel satisfied. Its finding the right balance for you.

    Thanks everyone for the replies!

The weight lose has slowed down; I've only lost one pound since I posted this thread which is less than it was before. And, it fluctuated between 159 and 158 for a few days before it finally went down and stayed down. :)
