Depending on what kind of shake you do.. I usually use Fusion Elite Rich Chocolate protein powder, 1 c of almond milk (60 calories) 6 ice cubes and 1 tablespoon of creamy peanut butter...

They are filling, full of protein and if you get the right kind of powder low in carbs =)

Plus they taste like milk shakes, so you feel like you are cheating but you really are not!

i usually have some after my workout. Its supposed to help re build muscle after working out. I have the Body Fortress vanilla and mix it with either Silk vanilla soy milk or Silk fruit n protein. Sometimes I have it for a quick meal if I need something really fast and lower calories.

So I could use it as a meal replacement if on the go ?

Sometimes I don't feel hungry enough to make a meal but feel as though I have to to keep the calories up. So could just have a protein shake for lunch instead :o)

There are lots of these types of drinks on the market. Not all are good or even do what they claim. The reason people take them is to either replace an entire meal, get nutrition, or build muscle with extra protein. As always, food is the best thing for your body but if time, and money become a problem, very few of these drinks can help so be careful what you invest in. For example many protein drinks will just give you diarrhea because your body can't process the stuff, others will claim nutrition but very little gets absorbed.

I have it after my workouts, but only when I lift weights. I like to mix it in with my oatmeal. I like the Syntrax Nectar. It has 0 fat, 0 carbs and 0 sugar per scoop. It's really good, too.
  • High protein diet + Strength training = Muscle. More muscle = more calories burned without doing anything.
  • it is the quick and convienent way of upping your protien requirments.. In my opinion they should be used just as they are described, as a supplement. I am not a believer in "meal replacement shakes".

Make sure that after a heavy lifting workout (yes the females need to be lifting heavy also) to get some prtien in you right a way to aid in recovery, make sure to have some quick acting carbs to assit in transporting that protien to the muscles.

    hope this helps.

i use protein powder to make shakes after my workouts. i started out just having them on my lifting days, but now i have them on cardio days too to help get my calories up and not eat unhealthy foods that i seem to crave more after a 600-700 burn on the elliptical lol

After a workout your body has about a 30 minute window to get good protein to its muscles. A lot of people take a protein shake to get it there the fastest. Whole foods take time to digest so that means the protein might not make it to your muscles in 30 minutes. Protein shakes are great because they are already broken down and get to your muscles the fastest. Think of a spounge that has been sitting out in the sun all day. When u throw some water on it the spounge soaks it up. This is what happens when you give your muscles protein after a workout, your muscles soak up the protein!

Well I dont lift weights and eat mainly fresh foods so I will probably forgo the protein shakes.

(and the fact that my neighbour takes protein and his farts are freakin awful  )

Thanks for all the replies, every day is certainly a school day
