I was musing about this while unpacking groceries tonight. I noticed....

Turkey Bacon instead of Pork Bacon.
Thinsations Oreo swapped for Oreos.
A Whole Pineapple, a 2kg bag of Red Delicious Apples, 6 Bananas and a bag of Baby Carrots in place of Potato Chips.
Whole Wheat Dempster's Thin Bagels instead of White Bagels
Store Bakery Bread instead of the Preservative-laden junk I used to buy...
Eggs, not Eggos!
Individual Quick Frozen Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breasts instead of Breaded Chicken Fingers.
16 Fat Free Yogurt Cups instead of Chocolate Pudding Cups.
1% Milk, not 2% Milk.
67% Less Sodium Garlic Dill Pickles, instead of the Salty kind.
Club House Spices (0 Cal, for those non-Canadians) instead of Shake & Bake (Bread Crumbs, Cornstarch = BIG calories!)
7oz Steaks where I used to buy 14oz.
5oz Butterfly Pork Fillets instead of Regular Pork Chops.
Bags & Bags of Frozen Vegetables in place of Potatoes & Canned Vegetables.

Anybody else notice this kind of thing happen to them? What have you swapped in your life?

I've personally found that my list has gotten a bit more expensive.

    I've swapped:
    -regular yogurt for Greek yogurt.

    Added:
    -more veggies (frozen and fresh)
    -more fruits (frozen and fresh)
    -oatmeal
    -protein powder

I started buying portabella mushrooms to go with my hamburgers (96% fat free instead of 85%) instead of buns!! Love spaghetti squash instead of pasta!! No more graham crackers b/c I will over do it everytime! Especially when I put peanut butter and jelly on them!! Stopped buying them completely!!

....not going to list all the changes but it has definitely gone up in price that is for sure! LOL :) But...spending money on groceries is an investment in my health and well worth the extra cash!

lots of fresh veggies and fruits

Nowadays I spend most of the time of my shopping trips at the produce area. I also have been going to the store more often since you can't really buy large quantities of fresh produce at once, so I always running out of something.
    Plain greek yogurt instead of fruit on the bottom;
    Almost never buy bread, oatmeal instead;
2 dz of eggs a week instead of 1 every other week.
  • I don't buy frozen pizzas unless lean cuisine pizzas

I shop in the produce aisle now and actually buy veggies.

I compare sodium content and buy the one with less sodium instead of the cheapest one

I buy lean meats and hardly any processed cheeses

No more 6 packs of soda (not even impulsively in the lines! yay!)

No pringles :( or potato chips. <-- this is the only one i wish i could buy all the time!

I eat a lot cleaner so I only shop the outside part of the grocery store- meats, produce, dairy, eggs, seafood, whole grains and nuts. Rarely even go down the isles- that's where all the processed stuff is! (except to get coffee and frozen veggies)

P.S. Still LOLing at "sodium snobs" that's so funny! I do have to eat lean cuisines at times so I understand.

Tuna and bread instead of pizza.
Eggs and fruit instead of candy.
Healthy Choice tv dinners instead of hot pockets.
    Bell peppers, onions and tomatoes
    No more candy bars.
No doughnut every day (it actually got that way for a while there :(.... )
No more sweets every time I hit the grocery store.
No sodas... just zero calorie powerade when I feel dehydrated.

*sigh* I was so freaking lazy in the food department.

I have switched to eating more "clean". So I buy a lot more fruits and vegetables as opposed to 100 cal packs and Low Carb airy foods.

I do not buy anything that has high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils, dyes, excessive preservatives...you get the point. Typically if it has more than 7 ingredients or I don't know what the ingredient is I leave it alone.

I eat very little beef, no pork (for years though) eating mostly lean poultry and seafood

100% Whole Wheat Bread for everything (loafs, tortillas, Pitas, etc)

    NO SPLENDA (this was hard!!)

Definitely more fruits and veggies, which also means going shopping more often, which is fine b/c my kids love all the fruit too.

No cookies :( because I decided we still will have cookies, but only if I make them...that way it will be at least made with fresh ingredients and won't be made very often.

18 pack of eggs every week instead of a dozen every couple of weeks.
Skim milk for me instead of 2%
    Oatmeal instead of cinammon bagels
    More chicken than beef
    Spinach...(we'll see)

A little more expensive, but worth it!
  • I love dempster's thin bagels!

I don't buy cookies or chips anymore (unless they're baked chips or tortillas)... the cookies part was hard because I really loved lofthouse soft sugar cookies (180 cal per cookie! Yipes! and I would eat half the container in a sitting...double yipes!)

I've started buying meat... I didn't used to because I thought it was expensive...but now I don't buy the junk food that I used to and so buying meat doesn't actually wrack up my grocery bill that much!

I buy what I need and not the junk I think I want :P I usually go to the store with a recipe in mind, and buy just what I need for that recipe!

One big change is the increase in money I'm spending at the grocery store! But...I have to admit I'm probably saving double that by not going out to eat as much (or buying fast food)!

    Let's see....

    before:

    mac n cheese
    doritos
    soda
    mac and cheese
    hot pockets
    pizza rolls
    the like

    after:

    multigrain pasta
    wheat crackers
    juice and whole milk
    lean proteins
    fresh veggies
  • I compare sodium content and buy the one with less sodium instead of the cheapest one

This has been a huge change for us. Hurts the pocket book a little more but it's well worth it.

I rarely eat processed food now. No red meat, no bread unless it 100% whole grain wheat, no pasta, no sweets other than fruit. Lots of fresh veggies and fruits, eggs, tuna, turkey breast, and chicken breast. I used to eat meal helpers with beef almost every night with instant potatoes, and I used to snack on hot cheetos and reeses.

I have to agree with this. This is really hard, especially since my house is on a very tight budget. We HAVE had to sacrifice a lot (whether it's fatter ground beef instead of the leaner, roma tomatoes instead of the beefsteak ones, etc).... and a couple of times, we've had ramen noodles for dinner because it's really hard to stay in budget (of usually less than $100 a week at the grocery for 3 people AND eat cleaner). I've gotten to the point where right now, even though money is hard, I find I'm really sticking to the portion control, and I'm losing inches (not so much weight-wise), but I'm still eating some of the no-so-healthy things.

I don't even go down the pop and chip aisle! (I actually find that not spending money on that helps pay for the fruit and veg)
    Lots more veg, more fruit
Hubby is watching his intake too.. meat costs down considerably..
Don't buy as much sandwich 'meat'...usually eat a small leftover portion of supper or a lean cuisine for lunch instead
Cheese now lasts a LOOOOONG time.. that saves money too
We have a bag of chips in the cupboard...opened at Christmas.. there's still some chips in the bag! We are keeping them to see how long before we throw them out - but here's our thinking:
Me: "Honey, should we get some chips?"
Hubby" "Nah, there's still some in the cupboard if we want some"
So far, it's working..lol..it's all mental, right?

Glad to see everyone eats as many eggs as I do! I buy an 18 pack about every 1.5 - 2 weeks just for myself as opposed to hardly ever eating them.
Kashi cereal instead of Cap'n Crunch
    No more macaroni and cheese.
No more snacks WHILE grocery shopping.
    Rarely buy cheese.
Lots more fruits and veggies (whereas they were few and far between before)

Mine hasn't changed much at all-- I've always had a healthy diet. Just less wine, and less butter/flour/sugar because I don't bake much anymore.

I feel like I'm buying two of everything-- normal whole wheat bread and my 45 calorie per slice whole wheat, reduced fat or Weight Watchers string cheese, Kashi for me and Oatmeal Squares or Honey Bunches of Oats, egg whites for me, eggs, meat replacement stuff and actual meat...

I do still think it is worth it, it just takes a lot of careful planning, coupon cutting, and price shopping.
