Running / Cycling with a broken wrist

I did a really stupid thing on Saturday - I tripped over a bush whilst I was out running with my sister.

The long and short of it is - I may or may not have broken my wrist, but they have put it in a cast anyway.

Can I still exercise whilst my hand is in the cast? Or shall I stop until it is better?

Thanks

  • First of all, I'm not a doc... or even in the medical profession. That being said, I don't see any reason why you wouldn't be able to continue running. I've had wrist issues for years (3 surgeries in 3 years), and while cycling has been difficult, running has been an amazing outlet for me. After my first surgery, the strength in my wrist bounced back very quickly, and I was told by my physical therapist that it may have had to due with my running.

    My advice:
    1. Do what your doctor says.
    2. Be leery of the cycling.
    3. Run, Run, Run!

Good luck, and happy healing. Also, no worries about the whole tripping over a bush thing. Tell that to any runner, and you get plenty of sympathy, mixed with a few friendly smirks.
  • I broke my thumb last year (in a cast up to my elbow though) and continued to exercise... mostly indoors (so it was air conditioned/cooler and therefore less sweaty inside my cast, lol). I did run a few times outside, but didn't cycle at all outdoors, however I did do a spin class twice a week while in the cast.
