Question about heart rate

I have been exercising daily since starting my healthy lifestyle change ... before this I was a couch potato - computer chair potato to be more precise ...
I am going to buy one of those Polar FT7 but they tend to be quite dear so I am hoping my hubby will get me one for my bday ... In the meantime I downloaded an app for my iPhone (Heart Rate Monitor Pro) not sure how accurate it is but it had good reviews...
I tried to use it several times but it means I have to stop exercising to use it ... Today I did Zumba - the 20 mins express workout and I used the HRM just at the end of the workout ... My result was:
161 and going down quickly 156, 140, 134 then it was bouncing between 110 and 117 for few minutes.
Do you think that is a fairly accurate result? How can I find out an average heart rate, during the workout? *Sorry if I sound a bit newbish*
BTW: I am 5ft 1 and 167lbs ...

I wouldn't trust it because honestly how could your phone possibly know your heart rate. It has no sensors that could possibly pick your heart rate up so it's just guessing or coming up with numbers based on the movement the phone can feel. It has no way of knowing how fast or slow your heart is actually beating.0

Do you stick your finger up to the camera, and it supposedly knows your HR from that?
Ya, flaky.
Better would be an app (no idea if exists) where you hit a start button, it counts down 3 or 5 seconds, and then has you time your heart beats within 6 or 10 or 15 seconds, and you enter that and it does the math and shows your HR/min.
But now you gotta keep your phone on you, beside you.
And does water damage from sweat get covered by phone insurance?0 -
Yes it is one of those apps that you have to cover the camera lens with your finger and supposedly it captures the blood pumped into your finger.
There are other apps that do work better for the running I guess, but nothing for aerobics ...
I know it's not ideal, I was just trying to see how accurate one of these apps might or might not be.
Thank you for your replies.0
