Eating and exercise - what's the deal?

I am taking in about 1300 calories a day and doing about 500 calories worth of exercise a day.........what's the deal with being under the calorie goal? It's all so confusing!!! Will I lose weight in a good way this way? All help much appreciated! Thanks!
