Do any of you stop to think for a second?

I have never seen so many rude, hateful people as I have here. Do any of you ever stop to think about how the other person feels? There are a lot of emotionally fragile people here. Would you handle these conversations differently if someone you care about had these same opinions? Cruelty like I see here has pushed people to suicide. You never know what frame of mind a person is in when you tell them that their way of thinking, their way of being, is worthless. Would you even care what happens to them or how they feel or how their family would feel, if, God forbid, they chose to take their lives?

Have you stopped to think whether this has anything to do with

I'm guessing your pretty angry about a post or two you've read. I don't know which ones so I can't speak specificalliy on it...I will say however that I'm very impressed by the lack of rudeness on here. It does come through once in awhile. There was one thread in particular that really bothered me. But for the most part for every unsupportive jerk or demotivational comment there are 100 supportive MFP posters or 100 productive and motivational comments.

Some of the forums (non weight loss related) i've been a part of in the past were 90% negativity. I love this place.

What if I killed myself from the guilty thoughts that someone might have killed themself; a thought stemming from this thread you posted? You'd feel bad wouldn't you?

Jeeze...not really helping when people's responses are rude.

How about instead of yelling back at someone whos upset you all take a second and try to figure out why the poster is feeling that way. Is it really necessary to come in and get all defensive?

  • omg i agree.

i hate bullies on the internet and in real life. :noway:

who are we to judge and make rude comments? you dont know if thats the one comment to really push someone over the edge.

i feel sick knowing people have KILLED themselves due to the words of thoughtless jerks.

lets be encouraging and positive. i like to put out positive energy to the universe in order to get it back.

I rarely see people being outrightly rude here, honestly. Challenging someone's opinions or, often misguided, beliefs is not being rude. It's called discussion - which is the entire point of a forum. You lay a question out for a group of people and they discuss it based on their knowledge and experience.

If someone disagrees with you, and this upsets you, grow a thicker skin.

Who's yelling? You seem to be putting your own inflection into the limited amount of disagreeing responses sir.

The stress from being picked on in a thread could make a person go eat, so it would go with that.

actually, now that you mention it. I don't stop and think about anything, except for myself and my kids, and sometimes my friends. Other than that no.

Were you just trying to prove her point?

There's a new group called Anti-Snark for people that would like to post in forums without rude, sarcastic comments.
Personally, now that I'm exercising, I don't have the energy to deal with hateful people.

I haven't been on here long but I haven't seen much outright rudeness. Been on forums ten times worse than this one when it comes to bluntness. For the most part I was surprised at how helpful and nice folks are on here.

I know it isn't "general diet and weight loss help" but they didn't have a section for "rant about mean jerks and bullies"....... but hey, thanks for proving my point. That was a criticism that was neither necessary nor useful. Just like spelling/grammar errors.

And, yes. There is an amazing community here of genuinely caring people who just want to offer support and sometimes brag on how they are doing. Well deserved bragging. But the ones that care to offer none of that, kinda ruin it for a lot of people. But when a thread turns on a person, they come out teeth gnashing and claws extended.

I'm with Luke on this one. I apologize for whatever you have had to deal with, but everyone that I have had any encounters with have been so supportive, honest, but supportive.

    Yes I do.

There are a number of astonishingly helpful, knowledgeable, kind and balanced posters giving advice on here. They for the most part are ignored because most people seem more attracted to drama than seeing the abundant value and positivity on here.

Your experience will depend on where you choose to focus your attention.

I have been nothing but happy on here.

I have been a member for over a year (just a new profile) and I have NEVER seen someone call another person worthless on here.

I generally do not reply rudely to folks, I stop reading and move on.
    Exceptions:
People selling things, whether for profit, or to advance any one of several "sancti-fit" agendae.
Also, those hyping unhealthy or dangerous ideas get a snark or barb.
Or, most likely, I start to write something, then shake my head, and go do something more productive.

I actually think that, on the whole, the posts on this site are hugely positive - as with anything (particularly anything on the internet) there will always be room for thoughtlessness and jackassery, but I think the ratio of bad to good on MFP is strongly weighted towards the good

See....... teeth and claws. I see many threads go in this direction. In high school, bullying was a main factor in my own attempt at suicide. It is also why I had to go into rehab for an ED. Thicker skin isn't something you can run out and buy. Some people cannot deal with hurtful words.
